China backs ‘all efforts’ towards Ukraine peace, ready for constructive role

Beijing backs all peace efforts, including US President’s Donald Trump’s latest bid to strike a deal with Russia to end the war in Ukraine, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Thursday.

In an address to Group of 20 (G20) foreign ministers, Wang said Beijing was ready to play a constructive role in any political settlement.
He added that the positions of the parties were not unanimous and simple solutions to complex problems would be hard to find, but “dialogue is better than confrontation, and peace talks are better than war”.
“China supports all efforts aimed at peace, including the recent consensus reached between the US and Russia, and hopes for a resolution that is both sustainable and durable, one that effectively considers the concerns of all involved parties,” Wang said.
“China is willing to play a constructive role in the political resolution of the crisis, taking into account the needs of those involved and the concerns of the international community, especially countries in the Global South.”

The G20 is made up of 19 of the world’s major economies, the European Union and the African Union, which joined the group last year. Aside from Wang, others attending the meeting in South Africa included EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio skipped the meeting in a protest against domestic land policy in the host country South Africa.
A month into his second presidency, Trump has dramatically altered US strategy regarding the conflict and abandoned Washington’s previous efforts to isolate Moscow for its invasion that started almost three years ago.
