Colin Farrell just added another trophy to his collection, winning Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series at the 2025 SAG Awards for his role as Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot in “The Penguin.” His transformation into Gotham’s infamous crime boss was nothing short of spectacular, and this win cements just how much of a powerhouse performance he delivered.
The night wasn’t without its hilarious moments. According to People, Jamie Lee Curtis, who was presenting the award, made sure to remind everyone of her unique connection with Farrell. “He’s the man who gave me COVID at the 2023 Golden Globes,” she joked, getting the crowd laughing. When Farrell took the stage, he didn’t miss a beat, responding with, “Guilty as charged!” before throwing his “Banshees of Inisherin” co-star under the bus, adding, “But I got it from Brendan [Gleeson] first.”
But it wasn’t all jokes. The post went on to mention how Farrell took a heartfelt moment to acknowledge his sister, Claudine’s work, saying, “My sister Claudine, who I’ve never mentioned before publicly, but she’s one of the producers on the show.” It was a sweet and unexpected shoutout, proving just how much “The Penguin” was a labor of love.
One of the biggest feats of “The Penguin” was how completely unrecognizable Farrell was in the role. Credit for that goes to legendary prosthetics artist Mike Marino, who spent hours crafting the look that made Farrell disappear into Gotham’s criminal underworld. The end result? A version of the character that felt ripped straight from the comics but with a fresh, gritty twist.
Farrell also loved the creative freedom the series allowed him; well, mostly. He told The Wrap in 2024, “I was fighting to try to get a cigar into the film… And they were like, ‘Nope.'” Turns out, even in an R-rated crime drama, some things just don’t make the cut.
With “The Penguin” already making waves and Farrell’s performance being one for the books, this SAG Award win is just further proof that his take on Oz Cobblepot is something special. Whether it’s the full transformation, the brutal yet charismatic performance, or the perfect balance of humor and menace, Farrell’s “Penguin” is the kind of role that doesn’t come around often… and it’s clear he made the most of it.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Director Matt Reeves confirmed that “The Penguin” will directly tie into the next film, saying, “Oz does become one of the entry points into the movie,” he explained. “I can’t tell you where it goes from there, except to say that we’re super excited about it,” which seems to be setting up key power struggles and alliances that will shape Gotham’s future.
With Farrell’s award-winning performance and the show’s role in shaping the future of Gotham, “The Penguin” isn’t just a spin-off, it’s essential viewing for anyone invested in this dark, gritty Batman universe. Batman fans will be thrilled to know “The Penguin” is available for streaming on Max.
