She said: “So for any road user basically the advice is not to travel.

"It’s quite unusual for us to have a red weather warning, so for the duration of that warning being in place the advice is not to travel.

“Red warnings don’t happen very often and clearly when they do happen we need to be prepared and we need to provide that advice to all road users.

"So it’s really just reiterating the fact that there should be no travelling at all during the period of the warning.”

The traffic police chief urged motorists to follow their warnings or face the dangers Storm Eowyn is set to unleash across Central Scotland.

She said: “Debris and fallen trees are just some examples of the things that they could expect, which is why we’re reiterating the advice around not travelling at all.”

Chief Supt Sloan also offered advice for those who do choose to go onto the roads tomorrow, and what to do if they get into trouble.

She added: “What I would say if anybody is out on the road to make sure that they’re prepared and they have a fully charged phone and their vehicle is ready to travel. But again just to reiterate the advice is not to be on the roads during the period of the warning.

“If they get into trouble, they need to contact the emergency services depending on what situation they find themselves in. But obviously to reiterate that, we don’t want people to put themselves in that position, so the advice is not to travel.

“It will be busier for the emergency services, but we’re working in conjunction with our partners as you say to make sure that we’ve got that response ready as and when it’s required.”

A final yellow alert for wind is in place from midnight tonight until midnight the following day.

Gusts of 90mph are expected and some areas along the coast could even see gales of up to 100mph.

Scores of schools and nurseries have told parents and kids they will not be opening tomorrow.

Twenty councils across Scotland have announced closures.

The storm will also spark travel chaos tomorrow.

What should I do to stay safe?

Keep yourself and others safe; avoid travelling by road during potentially dangerous conditions. It is not safe to drive in these conditions.

Don't risk injury to others or damage to your property. If you can do so safely, check for loose items outside your home and secure them. Items include; bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, sheds, and fences.

Being outside in high winds makes you vulnerable to injury. Stay indoors if you can.

People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance. It’s easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items.

If you live or work on the coast, beware of large waves, even from the shore large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea. In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Stay up to date with the weather forecast for your area and follow advice from emergency services and local authorities.

ScotRail has axed ALL SERVICES over safety fears sparked by the storm.

"This brings the risk of significant disruption to transport and power supplies as well as dangerous conditions outdoors. Winds will gradually ease through Friday evening."
