John Saint Ryan, who was best known for his role as Charlie Whelan on Coronation Street, has died at the age of 72 after suffering a heart attack, his family have announced
Former Coronation Street actor John Saint Ryan has sadly passed away at the age of 72, his family have confirmed. His wife Joyce shared the heartbreaking news on Facebook, writing: "I and our family want to let our friends know that John had a heart attack the evening of Thursday 3rd of April.
"We were with him at the hospital where the staff did everything possible but unfortunately he did not survive. We are absolutely heart broken. John wanted to aid medical research and donated his body, so there will not be a funeral. Later, we will arrange a celebration of his wonderful life. We are all fortunate to have known and loved this special ''Gentleman'' as he has been described to me numerous times over the last couple of days."

John was born in Burnley, Lancashire, in 1953 and before his acting career took off, he was a martial arts teacher in his hometown.
His first gig in the industry was as a stunt double for James Bond icon Sean Connery in the film The Medicine Man. He made his official acting debut in Channel 4's G.B.H. in 1983, reports the Mirror.
He then bagged a minor role in ITV soap Emmerdale as Jameson before landing the Coronation Street role that would catapult him to fame. John was cast as long distance lorry driver Charlie Whelan.
John's character Charlie sparked a whirlwind romance with Rovers Return landlady Bet Gilroy (played by Julie Goodyear) during her separation from husband Alec Gilroy (Roy Barraclough).

However, Charlie's charm was irresistible and barmaid Tanya Pooley (Eva Pope) couldn't help but fall for him. The two ran off to Germany together after Charlie's fling with Bet, but it wasn't meant to be as Tanya dumped him shortly after their move.
After his stint on the soap, he relocated to California in the 90s, where he continued to make a name for himself in film and TV.
He bagged supporting roles in a variety of shows, including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, General Hospital, Murder, She Wrote, Cybill, and The Heidi Chronicles. He also played the main villain in the sci-fi action flick American Cyborg: Steel Warrior.

John is survived by Joyce and their three sons.
