County Durham author to publish second book in trilogy set in region
County Durham bestselling author, Glenda Young is set to have her second book in the ‘The Toffee Factory Girls’ trilogy, set in…
The books, published by Headline, were inspired by the rich social history of the North East of England.
The setting of the trilogy is an old toffee factory, in the market town of Chester-le Street, ‘Dainty Dinah’.
Glenda said: “I fell in love with the idea of a toffee factory in the middle of Chester-le-Street and during the research, I really got involved with the idea of the women who were working there I was so taken by the two words “Dainty Dinah” those two words have inspired three novels.”
“The research has been spectacular. I did lots of research at Beamish. I also went down to Halifax which is known as Toffee Town because that is where Mackintosh Toffee started. Looking through the archives of the Mackintosh Toffee company and looking through the minutes of the meetings was like a novel in itself, it has just been amazing”
The series follows three girls ‘the toffee factory girls’ as they navigate work, life, love, and of course, war. World War One is rumbling on too, with the introduction of sugar rationing in this release.
Glenda Young said: “This is the second book and is set during World War One and it is where sugar rationing hits really badly and the factory is sent into turmoil. The first book ‘The Toffee Factory Girls’ is set just at the outbreak of World War One and the second book is ‘The Secrets of the Toffee Factory Girls’.”
‘Secrets of the Toffee Factory Girls’ which features a wedding between two unlikely characters is going to be released ahead of Valentine’s Day, 13th February. The book is available to pre-order on amazon.
Glenda will be holding a book signing on 27 February, 11am-1pm, at The Crafty Gift Shop in Chester-le-Street, which is on the site of the old Dainty Dinah factory.
There will also be a book signing at Willington Library, 20 February, 1pm, as part of the Durham Libraries Local Author Festival.
Glenda has her fourth cosy crime novel coming out later this year and is already writing her fifth in the award-nominated ‘Seaview Hotel’ series.
