Kim Ji Eun Talks About Playing A Woman Disguised As A Man In Upcoming Drama “Check In Hanyang”
Kim Ji Eun has shared her thoughts on her upcoming drama “Check in Hanyang”!
Set in the Joseon era, “Check in Hanyang” is a romance drama about youths who become “interns” at Yongcheonlu, the grandest inn in all of Joseon. Bae In Hyuk will star as Lee Eun Ho, a prince who is secretly hiding his identity, while Kim Ji Eun will play Hong Deok Soo, a woman who disguises herself as a man to join Yongcheonlu.
Describing the drama, Kim Ji Eun remarked, “It’s the story of Deok Soo, who winds up disguising herself as a man for a certain reason, and what unfolds between four youths—including Deok Soo—at Yongcheonlu, the grandest hotel in Joseon.”
As for why she wanted to star in the show, she explained, “It’s my first historical drama, and I also found the premise of a woman disguising herself as a man intriguing, so I wanted to be part of the production.”
In the story, Hong Deok Soo goes undercover at Yongcheonlu in order to uncover the truth about her father’s death. Although she faces many hardships after her father passes away, she consistently finds a way to carve out a new path for herself even within a difficult situation.
“Deok Soo is a character who, when she’s going through a hard time, doesn’t let it show and instead overcomes [her struggles] cheerfully and pluckily,” said Kim Ji Eun. “I found that aspect of the character very cool.”
When asked how similar the character is to her real-life personality, Kim Ji Eun humbly replied, “I’m fairly plucky myself, but I think Deok Soo is braver and pluckier than I am.”
“Check in Hanyang” will mark two big firsts for Kim Ji Eun: it’s both her first historical drama and her first time playing a woman disguised as a man.
“Through this drama, I wanted to show that Kim Ji Eun can pull off a variety of genres,” commented the actress. “I think ‘Check in Hanyang’ will remain with me as a new challenge and a step forward in my growth.”
