Defending state champ St. Ignatius all business in regional final
KENT, Ohio — Defending state champion St. Ignatius proved too much for Canton McKinley on Saturday night during their OHSAA Division I boys basketball regional final at Kent State.
The Wildcats trailed briefly in the first quarter and took the lead with a basket by Dayton recruit Damon Friery, who finished with 16 points and nine rebounds. Kalli Johnson scored a team-high 19 points and St. Ignatius cruised to a 73-46 victory at the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center.
They will play Sunday next week in the state semifinals at a site and against an opponent to be determined late this weekend by the OHSAA.
Reed Sims Jr. led Canton McKinley (20-6) with 21 points, six rebounds and three blocks. Anthony Chavers added 10 points, as did Jayveion Carter off the bench.
R.J. Jones added 11 points for the Wildcats. He also blocked three shots, as did Friery.
