While Denzel Washington was in his early twenties, the actor’s future was prophesied by a family friend.
The two-time Academy Award winner recalled the life-changing moment in a new profile with The New York Times, where he shared that the prophecy was given at his mother;s beauty salon in March 1975.
“The reason I was in there was I had flunked out of college — I was told to take a semester off to think about what I wanted to do. And every time I looked up, I saw this woman looking at me, and she said she was having a prophecy. She didn’t say anything about me being an actor, but I have traveled the world, and I am speaking more and more,” he said.
Washington, who last starred in Gladiator II, spoke about the “prophecy” multiple times before, among them on The Oprah Winfrey Show, when he detailed his future in a written note. Elsewhere, he confirmed that the spiritually gifted woman was named Ruth Green.
“She says, ‘Boy, you're going to speak to millions of people. You're going to travel the world and you're going to speak to millions of people,’” he said in the video above.” And I asked my mother, I said, ‘Well, who is this woman?,’ She said, ‘Well, she's one of the oldest church members in town and she's known to have a gift of prophecy.'"
While Washington previously thought he was meant to become a preacher, last December, the actor was baptized and received his minister's license during a service in New York.
