Dermatologist's three easy changes that will actually make your hair grow
Despite several factors being out of our hands when it comes to hair growth, a top dermatologist and haircare expert has shared three easy steps to implement which will help your hair grow
A leading dermatologist has revealed three "easy" steps that can help speed up hair growth.
Achieving long, luscious and healthy hair often seems like a daunting, unachievable task, especially when considering the unavoidable influence our genetics, age, and hormone levels can have on hair development.
However, there are manageable actions one can take to encourage better hair growth.
With a wealth of experts offering their tips and tricks online, it’s no surprise that many turn to social media platforms for professional advice. Dr Aamna Adel, a London-based dermatology registrar with expertise in skincare and haircare, has become a beacon of knowledge for those struggling with skin issues and seeking hair care assistance.
With a strong following on TikTok, she has connected with a large audience, keen to absorb her expert advice.
In one of her most recent TikToks, Dr Adel outlined three practical steps to possibly enhance hair growth. Speaking into the camera, she explained: "I'm a dermatologist, I specialise in hair, and the first thing to understand is there is an average at which your hair grows. For most people, that is somewhere between half a centimetre all the way up to two centimetres [per month]."
The expert elaborated: "When it comes to hair growth, there are some things you cannot control. I'm talking about your age, your genetics, your hormones but there are some things that you can control. Let's talk about what it is you can do to make your hair grow faster."
Diet
Discussing diet and its impact on hair health, Dr Adel highlighted: "The first thing is your diet. We are not sitting around snacking on M&Ms and Doritos; you need to have a diet which is rich in proteins."
Foods high in protein include eggs, fish, poultry, beef, beans, lentils, tofu, and nuts, in addition to Quorn, seitan, and peanut butter. It's recommended men should consume 55 grams of protein daily, while women should aim for 45 grams.
Supplements
On the topic of supplements, Dr Adel advised: "The main vitamin deficiencies I see in clinic, literally all of the time, is Vitamin D deficiency and iron."
According to the NHS: "Vitamin D helps regulate the amount of calcium and phosphate in the body. These nutrients are needed to keep bones, teeth and muscles healthy. A lack of vitamin D can lead to bone deformities such as rickets in children, and bone pain caused by a condition called osteomalacia in adults."
Iron is also crucial for health as it's a mineral necessary for growth and development. The body uses iron to create haemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells that transports oxygen.
Regular hair maintenance
Dr Adel explained that maintaining healthy hair, particularly the mid-sections and ends, can lead to reduced breakage and overall healthier locks. To achieve this, she recommended incorporating regular trims, bond treatments, and heat protectants into one's haircare routine.
The dermatologist concluded: "All of those things in combination can actually help speed up how quickly your hair grows because your hair is just going to be more healthy.
"So, yes, how fast hair grows feels different for everybody but there are definitely things you can do to speed up the process."
