If you've opened TikTok or turned on the radio in the last few months, you probably would have heard a Doechii song.
The American rapper has been taking the music industry by storm. Not only has she won a Grammy Award, she's also just been named in the Glastonbury line-up.
Article continues belowJudging by the reaction, people are very excited for the 'Denial Is A River' star to take to the stage at Worthy Farm, joining the likes of The 1975, Neil Young and Olivia Rodrigo. One fan enthused: "Doechii at Glasto! That's insane." And another predicted: "Doechii's set is about to be iconic".
As we approach the legendary festival, scheduled for June, we've been delving into Doechii's journey to success. A common question is the meaning behind her rap name – and its origins are very inspirational.
Doechii, whose real name is Jaylah Hickmon, created her well-known alter ego during her school years. She used it as a means to rise above the bullying she was enduring at the time – and it's safe to say she's had the last laugh.
In an interview with Dazed, Doechii revealed: "I was bullied so bad that I was becoming somebody else for someone else's comfort. It f***ed up my head, because I always knew I was 'that girl.' I always knew I was dope as f***. My taste level was very high when I was young. I wasn't into the s*** that everybody else was into. Not to say they weren't into cool s***, but my s*** was just cooler.."
She continued: "I was in a position where I thought about killing myself because the bullying was so bad. Then I had this realisation: I'm not gonna do that, because then they're gonna all get a chance to live, and I'm gonna be the one dead, and look at my taste! Nobody wants that. I don't want that. That's not the life I want to live.
"I had gotten down to a point where I was thinking about taking my own life because of what other people thought about me. [But then] I realised, 'OK, what do I really think is important? What do I want here?' I had that realisation pretty young, and that birthed Doechii."
The rise of Doechii has certainly silenced any critics she might have had in the past. Her remarkable achievements speak for themselves – not only will she be performing at Glasto, but her mixtape 'Alligator Bites Never Heal' is also critically acclaimed.
She is the third female artist ever to take home the title of Best Rap Album at the Grammys. And adding to her accolades, Doechii claimed the honour of Billboard's 2025 Woman of the Year.
