Dolly Parton's heartfelt reason for never having kids with Carl Dean
Dolly Parton and Carl Thomas Dean never had children despite decades of marriage, and the singer explained why after admitting they even picked out names for future kids
Dolly Partonâs beloved husband Carl Thomas Dean tragically passed away yesterday at the age of 82.
The very private businessman married Dolly, 79, in 1966, with the duo having an unconventional marriage for the time. Carl was more than happy to let Dolly take the spotlight in their long relationship, and despite decades of marriage the couple never had children.

Dolly has addressed her and Carlâs unit of two in the past, and explained that while they were open to having children they trusted in fate, and admitted that she thought things worked out for the best. "God has a plan for everything. I think it probably was his plan for me not to have kids so everybody's kids could be mine. And they are now,â the 11-time Grammy Award winner said on the Today Show back in 2017.
Dolly spoke more on the topic three years earlier, and addressed how she and Carl ultimately felt about not having kids after saying she âused to think she should regret it.â
â
The star shared that she and Carl âjust assumedâ theyâd have kids in the early years of their time together, adding to Billboard: âWe werenât doing anything to stop it. In fact, we thought maybe we would. We even had names if we did, but it didnât turn out that way.â
Dolly again made it clear that she loved children, and that she thought God made her a mother to many rather than giving her biological kids. Dolly had 11 siblings, and opened up about being âvery closeâ to her nieces and nephews. Thankfully, it seems that everything worked out as it should have for Dolly and Carl, with the star saying: âNow that Carl and I are older, we often say, âArenât you glad we didnât have kids? Now we donât have kids to worry about.ââ

Carlâs death was announced on social media yesterday, with a statement reading: "Carl Dean, husband of Dolly Parton, passed away March 3rd in Nashville at the age of 82. He will be laid to rest in a private ceremony with immediate family attending. He was survived by his siblings Sandra and Donnie."
Dolly then added an emotional note in her own words, writing: "Carl and I spent many wonderful years together. Words can't do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years. Thank you for your prayers and sympathy. The family has asked for privacy during this difficult time.â
Dolly and Carl met when the singer was just 18, and tied the knot when she was 20. Even the coupleâs meeting sounds like it could have come from one of Dollyâs songs, with the duo crossing paths outside a laundromat after she moved to Nashville to start her music career.

"I'd come to Nashville with dirty clothes," she recalled of their first meeting, "I was in such a hurry to get here. And after I'd put my clothes in the machine, I started walkinâ down the street, just lookinâ at my new home, and this guy hollered at me, and I waved. Beinâ from the country, I spoke to everybody. And he came over and, well, it was Carl, my husband."
