Donald Trump shares fake Barack Obama chat video from Carter's funeral
With neither president revealing what the pair spoke about, speculation has mounted about the details of their conversation.
Donald Trump is facing scrutiny after sharing a fake video of him and Barack Obama talking at former President Jimmy Carter's funeral.
Obama and Trump, who have been fiercely critical of one another, were spotted laughing and chatting as they sat next to each other at Jimmy Carter's funeral on Thursday last week, in a moment that took the internet by storm, with one video of the interaction receiving more than 1.4 million views.
With neither president revealing what the pair spoke about, speculation has mounted about the details of their conversation. One forensic lipreader, Jeremy Freeman, told the New York Post that Trump told Obama: "We have to find a quiet place later to discuss a matter of importance," before later saying: "I can't talk; we have to find a quiet place sometime. This is a matter of importance and we need to do this outside so that we can deal with it, certainly, today."
Meanwhile, on Sunday, Trump shared a spoof of their talk complete with fake audio from the moment, pushing social media into another frenzy.
"I knew you'd win," a dubbed Obama said while seated next to Trump. A pseudo Trump then replies, "Come on. Anyone could beat her," referencing Vice President Kamala Harris, who Trump defeated in the 2024 presidential election.

Former President Barack Obama talks with President-elect Donald Trump, next to Melania Trump, as they arrive to attend the state funeral for former President Jimmy Carter at Washington National Cathedral in Washington, Thursday, Jan. 9, 2025. Trump shared a fake video of he and Obama talking at the funeral. Ben Curtis/APAs Harris and her husband, Douglas Emhoff, took their seats in the row in front of Trump and Obama, the faux Obama turned to Trump, saying, "Did you see that? [Harris] won't even look at me," prompting the simulated Trump to respond, "I was told [by] some of her people, apparently they said she fell off the wagon."
"I think she actually may have...and also she's not really built for this amount of pressure," fake Obama continued.
In another part of the clip, which Trump shared without a caption, the pair's mock conversation shifted focus to President Joe Biden and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
"He just didn't wanna leave," the forged Obama audio said of Biden. "I did what I could to help [Harris]. She was horrendous."
"You know what I realized? Hillary still hates me," phony Trump added. "So much."
The clip has received more than 60 million views on X. Newsweek has contacted Trump and Obama for comment via email.
After sharing the clip, Trump received some criticism. "I wonder how @BarackObama now feels about the way in which Donald Trump used his cozy, chummy, laughing chat with Trump at the Carter funeral to mock and smear Kamala Harris as an an alcoholic. You give Trump an inch, he takes a mile," journalist Mehdi Hasan wrote on X.
That came after some were critical of Obama for chatting to Trump at Carter's funeral. "You have to indicate to the American people that this is not normal ... grinning with someone that you have called a fascist over the last couple of years and the last months. That's not normal," former CNN host Don Lemon said on his YouTube program.
"Folks are tired of the behavior being normalized. Civility does not mean befriending people or forgoing your morals and your principles and your character," he added.
"If someone disrespects my loved one, I don't have to smile in their f******* face!" Lemon ranted.
Lemon also took aim at Obama. "Barack Obama is a classy guy. But these are the very same MAGA people who have called, and Donald Trump has helped promote, calling Michelle Obama a man," Lemon argued. "I'm not smiling in your face if you're calling my sister and my mother or my wife or my girlfriend a man. F*** you!"
On Thursday, Trump admitted to reporters that he "didn't realize how friendly" the pair's moment at Carter's funeral looked after reporters asked him about what they discussed during a presser at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida.
"I said, 'Boy, they look like two people that like each other.' And we probably do. [Me and Obama] have a little different philosophies, right? But we probably do. I don't know," Trump said.
Trump rose to political prominence by promoting the debunked "birther" conspiracy theory, falsely asserting that Obama was not born in the United States and was therefore ineligible to serve as president.
Meanwhile, Trump has repeatedly attacked the Obamas, saying Obama was an "ineffective" and "terrible" president and calling former first lady Michelle Obama "nasty" in October.
Earlier this week, it was revealed that Michelle Obama would not attend Trump's inauguration. No reason was given as to why. Her husband will attend. "Former President Barack Obama is confirmed to attend the 60th Inaugural Ceremonies. Former First Lady Michelle Obama will not attend the upcoming inauguration," a statement from the Office of Barack and Michelle Obama said.
Former President George W. Bush and Laura Bush are confirmed to be attending, as well as former president and first lady, Bill and Hillary Clinton.
Michelle Obama has openly expressed her disdain for Trump, accusing him of endangering her family's safety with his rhetoric. The Trumps did not attend President Joe Biden's inauguration in 2021 amid the president-elect's false claims that he won the 2020 election.
