Meghan Markle may not have the best relationship with her in-laws, but she is grateful to them for one thing. The former actress and her husband, Prince Harry, stepped down as working royals in 2020. At the time, they sparked controversy over their alleged difficulties as royals. However, Meghan doesn’t mind using her last name. 

She clarified her stance on being addressed as a Sussex on her new Netflix show, With Love, Meghan. During the show’s second episode, Mindy Kaling repeatedly addressed the duchess as “Meghan Markle” until the latter corrected her. “It’s so funny, too, that you keep saying Meghan Markle. You know I’m Sussex now,” she declared, adding:

“You have kids, and you go, ‘No, I share my name with my children.’ It just means so much to go, ‘This is our family name, our little family name.'”

Meghan shared similar sentiments about her last name in a recent interview, stressing how meaningful “Sussex” was to her. She explained that it was nice having something she, Harry, and their kids shared. Additionally, she noted her last name was a “huge part” of her love story, per Page Six.

Meghan and Harry got the respective titles Duchess and Duke of Sussex when they said their vows in 2018. Their two children initially did not receive the last name and were known as Master Archie Mountbatten-Windsor and Miss Lilibet Mountbatten-Windsor. Their titles were updated to Prince Archie of Sussex and Princess Lilibet of Sussex following Queen Elizabeth’s 2022 passing.

Meghan’s love for the Sussex name might shock fans as she has been vocal about her difficult time as a royal. She seemingly threw shade at the Royal Family on her new Netflix show during its final moments. We covered the story, noting she dropped her diss while speaking at a gathering she hosted. Meghan raved about her return to showbiz after leaving the entertainment industry in 2018 following her marriage to Harry.

While addressing her loved ones at the gathering, Meghan thanked them for their support in her “new chapter.” “All of that is part of that creativity that I’ve missed so much,” she said, presumably referencing her royal days. Meghan dropped what appeared to be another reference to her royal life on the show while addressing broken things.

She noted broken things could be “fixed … sealed and healed.” Meghan first opened up about her difficult life as a royal during a 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey. The duchess claimed she wanted to end her life following the severe criticism she received. Four years later, she seemed to have no regrets about leaving the Royal Family.

Meghan implied returning to California was the right decision for her on the Netflix show. She honored her hometown by claiming her final dish tasted “like home.” She also declared, “I’ve missed California.” However, it remains to be seen whether her new show will be a success or another low-rated project.
