Dwyane Wade is opening up about a health scare he experienced a couple of years ago. During an episode of his podcast âThe Why With Dwyane Wade," the former NBA star revealed that he was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2023.
The athlete admitted that he hadn't been staying on top of his routine doctors visits, but when his father had to undergo surgery and Wade noticed some unusual things about his own body, he decided to have a full body exam.

âWhy is my piss coming out slow?," he remembered asking himself. "Why is my stream ainât powerful? Why is it a little weak?âÂ
The scan then revealed that there was a tumor on one of his kidneys. âI didnât go in for my kidneys,â he shared. âBut because I did the full-body scan, they saw something.â
He explained that because the tumor couldn't be biopsied, they had to fully remove it through surgery to ensure if it was cancerous or not. On December 18, 2023, Wade had a procedure to remove 40% of his kidneyâwhich ended up being a life-saving decision, as the tumor ended up being cancerous.

âThank God that I did do the surgery, right?â he said. âBecause the tumor was cancerous.â
Wade opened up that the most difficult part of the recovery was having to be vulnerable in front of his kids. He shares Zaire and Zaya with ex-wife Siovaughn Funches, Xavier with Aja Metoyer, and Kaavia James with wife Gabrielle Union. He's also the legal guardian of his nephew Dahveon Morris.

âI think it was the first time my family, my dad, my kids, they saw me weak,â he shared. âThat moment was probably the weakest Iâve ever felt in my life.â
He added, âOne thing you never want to do as a man? You never want your family to see you weak,âÂ
