EastEnders announces Sonia Fowler twist during live episode
EastEnders viewers voted for Sonia Fowler's baby name after she went into labour during the 40th anniversary episode of the BBC soap and the result was revealed during the live episode on Thursday night
EastEnders has finally unveiled the name of Sonia Fowler's baby daughter live on air, and it was the public who had their say. In a nail-biting episode earlier in the week, Sonia shared with Lauren Branning and Bianca Jackson that she was torn between two names, Julia and Toni. But as the drama unfolded during the one hour episode on Wednesday 19 February with the explosion at the Vic and the tragic sight of baby daddy Reiss Colwell being crushed, baby naming took a backseat while Sonia was trapped in the Vic and in labour.
After the episode aired, fans visiting the EastEnders website to vote on the outcome of Denise's love triangle were given the chance to vote for a second time to name Sonia's little one. The two choices, Julia and Toni, were in tribute to EastEnders' creators Julia Smith and Tony Holland. The BBC website posed the question: "To honour the creators of EastEnders. Julia Smith and Tony Holland, what should Sonia name her baby?" And the people have spoken â the majority voted for Julia, reports the Mirror.

EastEnders viewers were on the edge of their seats as Sonia was in labour for much of the episode, with Lauren and Bianca stepping in with unconventional birthing aids â tea towels and booze â and plenty of support. Bianca's unique encouragement, "One more push like you're blowing your trumpet," proved effective as Sonia successfully gave birth.
After a heart-stopping moment where newborn baby Julia turned blue and a weakened Sonia looked in danger, there was collective relief when both mother and child screamed to life and ended up safe in an ambulance.
The poignant scene arrives just after Natalie Cassidy, who plays the beloved character, revealed she would be bidding farewell to Albert Square after three decades. The 41 year old actress shared how she felt "extremely sad" yet "very excited" about what's next, "After another 11 solid years back on the square, I have decided it's time to move on to pastures new," Cassidy expressed her attachment to the show, stating "EastEnders is in my bones so I will never forget where I started my career and I will continue to love the show."
In a heartfelt tribute to her time on the show, she thanked executive producer Chris Clenshaw for involving her significantly in the 40th-anniversary celebrations: "Thank you to [executive producer] Chris Clenshaw for the opportunity to be such a big part of the 40th anniversary - it's an honour. See you, Sonia, going but never forgotten."

Julia Smith and Tony Holland were tapped by the BBC in 1985 to create a London-based soap that could hold its own against the likes of Coronation Street and Emmerdale Farm. Fast forward 40 years, and their legacy continues with EastEnders remaining a staple of British television.
Tony, a London native, used many of his own experiences to shape the storylines and characters of EastEnders. The character Lou Beale was inspired by an East End character of the same name, as well as her children, Pete and Pauline.
After four years on air, both stepped down from the soap in 1989. Among their triumphs was the Christmas Day 1986 episode, which remains one of the most viewed moments on British television with an audience of 30.1 million.
The plot revolved around the collapse of Den and Angie Watts' marriage, with the unforgettable cliffhanger showing Den handing Angie divorce papers outside the Queen Vic. On Wednesday night, Anita Dobson returned as Angie Watts, appearing as a figment of her daughter Sharon's imagination. As Sharon lay amidst the rubble, her imagined version of Angie urged her not to give up. Sharon then cried out for help and was rescued by her ex-husband Grant Mitchell.
