EastEnders viewers were left in shock as the iconic pub, The Queen Vic, exploded, trapping several residents inside. Fans are now fearing that one beloved character may have perished in the fire.

The BBC One soap continued its 40th anniversary celebrations with chaos unfolding in Albert Square on Tuesday (February 18). Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins) was convinced her ex-husband Ian (Adam Woodyatt) was behind her Christmas Day attack and threatened to shoot him with a gun she had stolen from Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden).

‌

Despite Ian possessing her missing locket, he pointed the finger at his son Peter (Thomas Law) for the assault. However, Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth) revealed she was the attacker, seeking revenge for the pain Cindy had caused Ian.

A struggle ensued, and as Ian attempted to seize the gun from Cindy, she shot him in the arm. Elsewhere, Reiss Colwell (Jonny Freeman) broke into his ex-girlfriend Sonia Fowler's (Natalie Cassidy) house intending to leave her a card, much to Bianca Jackson's (Patsy Palmer) disgust.

‌

She tried to call the police, but the killer accountant managed to evade her and attempted to flee Walford in his car.

Meanwhile, at The Arches, a terrified Grant Mitchell (Ross Kemp), Linda Carter (Kellie Bright), and Nigel Bates (Paul Bradley) desperately tried to reach Phil, pleading with him not to harm himself as he battled suicidal thoughts, reports Plymouth Live.

Disaster struck suddenly when a confrontation between Ian and Cindy escalated just before Reiss, driving rapidly down Bridge Street, prompted Cindy to thrust Ian into the car's path. Reiss swerved to avoid Ian and crashed into The Queen Vic, setting off a fire.

‌

George Knight (played by Colin Salmon) spotted gas canisters and attempted to alert others, but it was too late; the pub exploded, leaving the future of Walford's beloved residents uncertain.

Some EastEnders enthusiasts fear Sharon Watts (portrayed by Letitia Dean) might be a casualty. Prior to the crash, Sharon had been in The Vic and announced she'd be heading upstairs after spilling a drink on herself.

‌

Post-explosion, viewers saw Ian staring at the wrecked building and noted that the upper level was demolished.

Fans took to social media to express their concerns, with one posting: "SHARON WAS UPSTAIRS #EastEnders." While another shared: "Sharon was upstairs and Stacey was in the toilets so them 2 could be most caught in the blast #EastEnders #EE40." (sic)

Others also expressed their worry, as one penned: "The Queen Vic's just exploded and Sharon's stuck upstairs #EastEnders #EastEnders40." Another insisted: "Sharon being upstairs when the roof looks like THIS... PROTECT OUR SHAZZA. #EastEnders." (sic)

One fan firmly stated: "If Sharon dies, I will never watch this programme again #E40 #EastEnders." Meanwhile, another was insistent as they wrote: "It's just dawned on me that Sharon went upstairs in the Vic.....she better not die #EastEnders." (sic)

EastEnders airs Monday - Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One and iPlayer
