EastEnders icon Pam St Clementâs life after Pat Butcher and why she quit soap

EastEnders legend Pam St Clement has become a soap icon thanks to her portrayal of Walford matriarch Pat Butcher.
Dressed in vibrant clothes and huge earrings, Pat first appeared in Albert Square in 1986 and quickly became a fan favourite. For 25 years Pam was a key part of the soap, involved in many dramatic storylines.
However, in 2012, her character left the show for good as she was shockingly killed off. Fans will remember how she was written out on New Year's Day after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
Pat made a surprise return in 2016, during Peggy Mitchell's (Barbara Windsor) final episode as the two on-screen best pals said goodbye to one-another. But Pam didn't want her character Pat to be killed off.
"It was very, very difficult. I was saying goodbye to a character I'd inhabited for almost 26 years and, while I had chosen to leave EastEnders, I didn't want Pat to die", Pam told The Mirror in 2015.

"I was adamant there should be a chance for her to return and had been assured by the executive producer she wouldn't be axed.
"When I felt the time had come to hang up the earrings I took Bryan Kirkwood, the then executive producer, out for dinner and broached the subject of leaving."
She added: "One crucial thing I asked for was that Pat shouldn't be killed off. Bryan's response was unequivocal. He assured me that Pat wouldn't be axed."
Off-screen, Pam, now 82, has led an interesting life and suffered immense loss. The actress was born in Harrow-on-the-Hill, Middlesex, but tragically never had the chance to get to know her mother as she died of tuberculosis before she was 30, and Pam was 18 months old.
Her father, Reginald, found it Âdifficult to cope, so throughout her childhood Pam was foisted on others. Speaking to The Guardian in 2012 about her parents, Pam said: "My father was married several times and I was very devoted to him, but he was a product of a broken family himself and was sent to an orphanage.
"I think he was carrying his own baggage and couldn't relate to anybody. I was farmed out for foster care at the age of about seven. It is the best thing that ever happened to me."

In 2015, she revealed for the first time that she had an affair with a woman. Pam, who identifies as bisexual, was married to a man named Andrew Gordon in the 1960s - but they later divorced.
In her autobiography The End of The Earring, Pam confessed that realising she was bisexual was like a "bombshell." She also admitted to having an affair with a woman while in Australia.
Pam continued: "That month in Sydney went all too quickly and we were soon saying our farewells at the airport with promises of reunions back in the UK.
"I nearly missed the plane, I was so bereft at leaving." Eventually, Pam started dating a woman named Diana. But in her book, she admitted that her tendency to "over-care" can sometimes "smother" relationships.
Opening up to The Mirror back in 2015, Pam said she had the odd fling "but nothing Âmeaningful". Then she fell in love with Diana, who was to become a major part of her life.

She said: "I fell for an attractive woman who was intelligent, witty and fun to be with. Diana and I settled into a happy and stable relationship.
"Looking back, I wonder if I should have stayed on my own. I want to love and be loved but I am fiercely independent.
"But this was a relationship I couldnât resist. It was a new experience, exciting and different in every way. We had our own professions but made a home together."
Following her heartbreaking EastEnders exit, Pam appeared in three episodes of Casualty in 2016 but other than that she has been enjoying a life away from the spotlight.
However, she did return to BBC One on Monday (February 17) to celebrate EastEnders turning 40.
After spending 13 years away from Walford, Pam appeared alongside Grant Mitchell actor Ross Kemp in the documentary EastEnders: 40 Years of the Square.

During an emotional hour-long special, she candidly spoke about her character while reminiscing with Ross aboard the number 38 bus.
Revisiting their past storylines, they also watched scenes from a touching 2016 episode where Pat returned as a ghost to console Peggy Mitchell, played by Dame Barbara Windsor, as she passed away.
The pair watched clips featuring their beloved late co-star, visibly moved by the memories. An emotional Pam said, "Well, I miss her", before adding poignantly, "I mean, basically I miss her tremendously" as she struggled to contain her emotions,
With tears in her eyes and Ross equally upset, it was clear that Dame Barbara's presence was profoundly missed.
