Eight DeRidder High School students were arrested for various crimes after law enforcement uncovered “organized criminal activity.”
On Monday, the DeRidder Police Department opened an investigation into a student who had a vape while on the bus. This investigation revealed the student had a vape and a firearm on school property.
It was later learned by DPD and Beauregard Sheriff’s Office detectives that the student was delivering the handgun to a peer, according to a Thursday news release.
There has been no threat made to any Beauregard Parish School Board Schools.
As the investigation unfolded, detectives found that several students were involved in a plan for a potential fight outside school property after school hours.
The age of the arrested students ranged from 13 to 18. The different crimes they were arrested for are carrying a firearm on campus, theft of a firearm, criminal conspiracy to possess a firearm on campus, home invasion, aggravated assault, simple battery, criminal conspiracy to commit simple battery, illegal carrying of weapons and underage possession of vape and tobacco charges.
About 27 firearms were found at the students’ “hangout” after a search warrant was issued. DPD said the homeowner has an outstanding warrant for “possession of firearms for persons convicted of domestic abuse battery.”
The investigation is ongoing and detectives expect more arrests, the release said.
