Elton John's furious tantrum as he tells singer to 'f*** off' and smashes iPad
Sir Elton John and Brandi Carlile have recorded a new album together, 'Who Believes In Angels?', which will be released on April 4 and the recording process was chaotic
Sir Elton John reportedly "smashed his iPad" and told his friend and collaborator Brandi Carlile to "f*** off" during the creation of their new album.
The 77 year old music icon and Americana artist Brandi, 43, have teamed up for the recording of 'Who Believes In Angels?', set to be released on April 4.
The duo embarked on this project while the 'Tiny Dancer' singer was recuperating from hip replacement surgery. His recovery period saw him in a "very grumpy" mood, leading to a tumultuous recording process as he was pictured bursting into tears.
In a chat with The Guardian, Brandi shared: "He smashed his iPad. He smashed headphones. There were really amazing, classic Elton John outbursts. My lyrics got torn up and thrown on the ground he goes: 'F*** off, Brandi.' He would yell: 'Predictable! Cliche!'".
Elton, who has been grappling with deteriorating eyesight that complicates his musical endeavours, attributes his volatile behaviour to feeling "anxious" about himself. However, he found his footing as they progressed with the project.
He clarified: "It wasn't me being anxious about other people."
"it was me being anxious about me. Once we got through the first three songs, we knew we had something. And I was much more relaxed ... but I was a bit of a nightmare."
To make amends for his outbursts, Elton treated Brandi to "whisky sours and steak at his favourite diner".
The legendary 'I'm Still Standing' artist announced his retirement from touring following his triumphal 'Farewell Yellow Brick Road' tour in 2023. Adding to a year of milestones, he headlined the iconic Glastonbury Festival, after which he confessed to believing that it could mark the end of his illustrious career.
Elton has now declared that he's laying the "put the old Elton to bed" to rest for good.
Expressing the impact of his Glastonbury performance, Elton revealed: "I think what Glastonbury did for me, and for my reputation in England, was something I'd yearned for all my life."
He spoke candidly about his image, remarking: "I know what you mean about the cuddly ... That's why I wanted to put the old Elton to bed."
Despite his status, Elton never really saw himself as one of the "cool" rock icons akin to David Bowie or Sir Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones. Tired of being pegged as "cuddly Elton", he's ready for change.
Elton reflected on his unique role in music and sports: "When I was the gay chairman of a football club (Watford FC), we were very successful."
Discussing his distinction from other rock legends, he added: "That was pretty radical. But I'm not Bowie, and I'm not Mick [Jagger]. And I've never been 'cool' like Nick Cave who I adore. I'm just me and I have to accept that, but that gives me the inspiration to change a little bit with this record and say: come on, you don't want to be cuddly Elton for the rest of your life."
