Elton John tells how he âstepped up to markâ to make new album at London gig

Sir Elton John rolled back the years on Wednesday evening in a London performance that also saw him reflect on how he âstepped up to the markâ to create his new album.
The one-off event, An Evening With Elton John And Brandi Carlile, saw the musical pair play tracks from their new collaborative record â Who Believes In Angels?
Host of the evening, Schittâs Creek star Dan Levy, asked Sir Elton why the first few days of recording were âtumultuousâ after the music star said he felt âfrustratedâ at the beginning of the process.
âI was getting really wound up. I wasnât feeling very wellâ, said Sir Elton, who had celebrated his 78th birthday on Tuesday.
âI was shattered after the tour, but I couldnât walk away from three other people that were committed to this.â
He added: âAnd so my main thing was me stepping up to the mark and once I got the song down that I really thought was great and I got the lyrics â the lyrics were always great â I settled down.â
The Grammy-winning stars debuted their new tracks to more than 2,000 people at the sold out concert.
Reflecting on why he created the album, Sir Elton said: âSheâs (Carlile) very well known in America.
âSheâs not that well known in the United Kingdom or around the world.
âI wanted to make this album to be with the most fantastic artist and musician and songwriter, but I also wanted her to have the publicity and the chance for the rest of the world to see how great she is.â
After the interview portion with Levy, Sir Elton and Carlile played songs from their new album including Swing For The Fences and You Without Me.
Veteran music star, Sir Elton, also treated fans to hits including Tiny Dancer, Bennie And The Jets, and Your Song â ending the night with a rousing rendition of Iâm Still Standing.
Carlile, 43, who has collaborated with artists including Hozier, Miley Cyrus and Alicia Keys, also performed her hit song, The Story.
The new album, which will be released on April 4, has been co-written by Sir Eltonâs songwriting partner Bernie Taupin and produced by Grammy Award-winner Andrew Watt.
In October 2023, Sir Elton, Carlile, Watt and Taupin wrote and recorded the album from scratch in 20 days at Los Angelesâ Sunset Sound recording studio, where they were joined by musicians including Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith and their former guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, who both played at the event.
Cameras captured the recording sessions and the footage was turned into a short film.
In November, Sir Elton revealed in an interview that limited vision caused by an infection had impacted his ability to record music and left him feeling âstuckâ.
His headline set at Glastonbury in 2023 was his last UK performance as part of his 330-date Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, which ended with an emotionally charged show in Stockholm, Sweden.
In January, he achieved his ninth UK number one album with Diamonds, a greatest hits compilation.
He has had 10 number ones in the UK singles chart with songs including Are You Ready For Love and Merry Christmas with Ed Sheeran.
An Evening With Elton John And Brandi Carlile will air on Saturday April 19 on ITV1 and ITVX.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Aryna Sabalenka entered the Miami Open final against Jessica Pegula with 18 career titles on her elite resume.
The Miami Open crown had proved elusive until Saturday.
The No. 1 seed from Belarus knocked off fourth-seeded American Jessica Pegula 7-5, 6-2 for her first Miami Open title in a rematch of the 2024 U.S. Open final.
Sabalenka fired up her lethal forehand in posting 22 winners on that wing to win the $1.1 million first prize. Sabalenka hit a backhand passing shot on match point after which she raised both hands to the air and looked up to the sky.
“Thank God the rain stopped,” Sabalenka said. “It was like Miami was crying that I won this tournament. I enjoyed playing here, every minute of it.”
Sabalenka, a three-time Grand Slam champion, had won the U.S. Open over Pegula, also in straight sets, 7-5, 7-5, but in 2025, Sabalenka’s finals luck had run out.
The 26-year-old power player had reached the finals of four of six events this year, though only copped one title (Brisbane) before Miami. Sabalenka lost in the finals of the Australian Open and at Indian Wells — the event that preceded Miami.
“You’re the best player in the world for a reason,’’ Pegula said to Sabalenka during the trophy ceremony. “You keep challenging everyone to get better. The level of tennis you’ve been able to play is amazing.’’
Sabalenka now lives in Miami but Pegula had the crowd support. Pegula, a 31-year-old Buffalo native, has lived in Boca Raton since she was 13 and is daughter of Terry Pegula, owner of the Buffalo Bills and Sabres. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was in attendance as the league owners meetings takes place Monday in nearby Palm Beach.
“It’s still cool to see this transform from a Dolphins-Bills game to a tennis stadium,’’ Pegula said.
Neither player could hold serve well in the first set. Sabalenka broke Pegula’s serve four times and won it 7-5, winning the last eight points of the set.
Pegula was up a break at 3-2 but couldn’t hold it in a topsy-turvy set that also saw Pegula break Sabalenka’s serve three times.
At 5-5, Sabalenka held serve at love for 6-5 lead, then broke Pegula at love after hitting three straight winners – two at the net.
Sabalenka leads the series vs. Pegula 7-2 and has won the last three meetings.
The men’s doubles final, first on the card, was stopped by rain in the second set with No. 1 seed Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic leading No. 6 Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool 7-6, 3-2. 30-30. Arevalo/Pavic closed out the championship quickly 7-6, 6-3, but the rain delay caused the 3 p.m. women’s final to begin more than one hour tardy.
