Emilia Pérez star Karla SofÃa Gascón has been slammed for body-shaming Adele and going on anti-Islam rants in her many offensive resurfaced tweets.
The Oscar-nominated star, 52, has been under fire after her past tweets about Islam, George Floyd, diversity at awards shows and China were dug up. The singer - who is the first transgender person to be nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Actress category - questioned Adele's weight loss after her body transformation in a tweet from May 6, 2020.
Sharing pictures of the Rolling In The Deep singer rocking glorious outfits, the Spanish star tweeted: "COVID passed, and she went overboard with the sleeves, or she went under the knife and they didnât remove the skin from her arms @Adele." Not only did she body-shame Adele, but she also shared offensive posts about Islam and the George Floyd protests.
Writing originally in Spanish, Karla called Floyd a "martyr hero" in the weeks after his death and said: "I truly believe that very few people ever cared about George Floyd, a drug addict and a hustler, but his death has served to highlight once again that there are those who still consider Black people to be monkeys without rights and those who consider the police to be murderers. All wrong.â
She went on to say that it âis no longer a question of racism but social classes that feel threatened by each otherâ. In November 2020, she tweeted about "more and more Muslims in Spain", writing: "Every time I go to pick up my daughter from school there are more women with their hair covered and their skirts down to their heels. Maybe next year instead of English weâll have to teach Arabic.â
Karla has since apologised for the tweets and deleted her account (

In a separate post, she tweeted: "Until we ban religions that go against European values and violate human rights, such as Islam, under the protection of freedom of worship, we will not end part of the huge problem we face. Faith manipulates those who cling to faith.â Another tweet from 2016 saw her tweet: "Islam is becoming a hotbed for infection for humanity that urgently need to be cured."
Karla also slammed the Oscars in 2021. The awards ceremony saw Daniel Kaluuya win Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Judas and the Black Messiah and Yuh-Jung Youn win Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Minara. Chloé Zhao also won in the directing category for Nomadland.
Responding to the wins, Karla posted on her page: "More and more the #Oscars are looking like a ceremony for independent and protest films, I didnât know if I was watching an Afro-Korean festival, a Black Lives Matter demonstration or the 8M. Apart from that, an ugly, ugly gala.â
She also tweeted about China during COVID-19, writing: "The Chinese vaccine, apart from the mandatory chip, comes with two spring rolls, a cat that moves its hand, 2 plastic flowers, a pop-up lantern, 3 telephone lines and one euro for your first controlled purchase."
Karla, who has since deactivated her X account, apologised for her offensive tweets in a statement released to The Hollywood Reporter. She said she could "no longer allow this campaign of hate and misinformation to affect neither my family nor me anymore, so at their request I am closing my account on X."
The actress said she received death threats and added: "I had long ago made the decision to close a social network [sic], which has taken a terrible turn, in which I have also sometimes fallen, and for which I apologise."
Her apology, in part, said: "I have defended each and every one of the minorities in this world and supported freedom of religion and any action against racism and homophobia in the same way that I have criticised the hypocrisy that underlies them, because the first thing I am critical of is myself. You will never hear me support a war, an injustice, extremism or applaud anyone who oppresses other human beings.
"Perhaps my words are not correct, many times due to ignorance or pure mistake. I apologize again if anyone has ever felt offended or in the future." Karla is currently up against Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Mikey Madison (Anora), Demi Moore (The Substance) and Fernanda Torres (I'm Still Here) for Best Actress at the Oscars. However, many fans are calling for her nomination to be revoked.
