Everything we learned from Meghan Markle's interview with People
The Duchess of Sussex revealed she plates up her Chinese takeaway and still has ‘day dates’ with Harry
It’s not full of shocking revelations, unsurprisingly, but it did give us some juicy morsels about Montecito living with Markle, sorry, Sussex.
Here are 10 takeaways from the interview, including one about takeaway:
The healing power of bone broth
When Prince Archie, 5, and Princess Lilibet, 3, are sick, Markle makes sure they are fed bone broth. While that sounds like Victorian-era gruel, it’s terribly trendy with the California wellness types. Gwyneth Paltrow is such a fan that she eats it for lunch. But yes, it is basically animal bones boiled in water. Appetising!
She’s a fan of the Sussex title
Despite all the hoo-ha over titles since Meghan and Harry stepped back from royal duties, Markle has a renewed appreciation for the late Queen Elizabeth II making them the Duke and Duchess of Sussex at their 2018 wedding. “It’s our shared name as a family, and I guess I hadn’t recognized how meaningful that would be to me until we had children,” she told People. “I love that that is something that Archie, Lili, H and I all have together.” Sharing the Sussex name is “part of our love story”. This talking point also appears in the first episode of With Love, Meghan, where she discusses it with celebrity friend Mindy Kaling.
Giving up The Tig was an act of love
Much has been made of how Markle sacrificed running her lifestyle blog, The Tig, to join the royal family, and how this new series is a chance to get back to sharing recipes et al. But she doesn’t begrudge having to mothball her brand. “Well, I loved The Tig, but I certainly love my husband more,” she told People. “That was a choice I made at the time, and I wouldn’t change that for a second.”
On keeping a suit from Suits
Well, half a suit. Markle, a former actor, came to fame playing Rachel Zane on Suits for seven seasons prior to her engagement. She looks back at her time on the legal drama with fondness. “I still have the pencil skirt from the first episode!” she said in the interview “That’s the one thing I kept.”
She’s grappling with Instagram’s changes
Keeping up with changing technology is hard even if your regularly update your apps and using them. For Markle, who had to take a royally enforced break from running her own Instagram, all those algorithmic updates are surely a shock to the system. The Duchess is aware that she’s become technologically out of touch. “When I was last on social media, Boomerang was the thing,” she told People. “Instagram Stories didn’t even exist. So it’s been a minute.” No word on whether she’s braved the wilds of TikTok in search of the Zoomer audience.

Don’t call her an influencer
Being called an influencer might be the career zenith that many seek, but Markle does not accept that particular title. “I see myself as an entrepreneur and a female founder,” she said. An entrepreneur and female founder who just so happens to use her personal brand as a tastemaker to promote her own range of jams! But she’s not totally averse to influencing her fans. “If the brand ends up influential, then that’s great,” Markle told People.
She’ll plate up her takeaway
In a professional kitchens you might hear the term plating up to describe the final moments where a dish is transferred from all the various cooking vessels to create an aesthetically pleasing dish for the waiting diners. This is something that Markle does in her own kitchen, to takeaway food (Chinese is her favoured cuisine). “Even when I get takeout, I will try to plate it beautifully,” she said. No serving straight from the containers in that house, clearly. While it sounds like making an awful lot of work – and washing up – for herself, I would watch an entire spin-off show dedicated to Markle trying to make sweet n sour chicken look aesthetic.
Her yoga class sounds... over-subscribed
Maybe this is a Brit being unfamiliar with Montecito exercise class sizes, but one of the most remarkable moments in Markle’s interview comes when she’s describing her yoga class. “I go to classes that sometimes have 40 to 50 people in them and just walk in like, ‘Hi!’,” she told People. This anecdote is meant to underscore how she’s re-integrating into civilian life and building a community. Which, fair, she could just hire a private yoga instructor and be done. But 50 people in a single yoga class?? Do they have yoga mega churches over there?? Do people really say ‘hi’ to everyone else in the class when they walk in?
That roast chicken is still in rotation
True Markle-heads know that she got Harry to propose by cooking him a really good roast chicken. But now her famous “Engagement Chicken” has had a rebrand (much like American Riviera Orchard becoming As Ever) as part of her “Mama Meals”. What is a Mama Meal, I hear you ask? It’s when you cook dinner for your children! “We call them Mama Meals,” she explained. “Those are the ones that I hope they come back to when they’re older, when they’re married, and they have their own kids, and they go, ‘Oh, let’s have a Mama Meal.’ And it’s the same roast chicken I’ve been making since they were little.”
Playdates and day dates
Keeping the romance alive when you have two small children is hard, but Meghan and Harry have developed their own life hack: “day dates” and “nightcap recaps”. A day date is having lunch together in the day. A nightcap recap is having a drink and talking about your day. It all sounds very business-terminology-as-a-love-language, but hey, if it works for them!
