Prince Harry and Meghan Markle garnered a lot of criticism over the last few weeks when they traveled to Los Angeles from their home in Montecito and visited areas affected by the wildfires. They were dubbed âdisaster touristsâ and accused of visiting the area only to generate good publicity for themselves.
They also upset a lot of people when they were allowed to go behind the yellow tape and were seen climbing over and walking around the properties of residents in Altadena who lost everything.
Given the bad press they received for that, itâs a bit surprising that Meghan decided to remind everyone that she was there with a new Instagram post.
On Feb. 4, Meghan posted a video on Instagram in which she shared a story about a 15-year-old she and Harry had met in Altadena. The former Suits star explained that the teenager and her family lost their home and most of their belongings in the fire including a prized Billie Eilish concert T-shirt. Meghan said that she then used her celebrity connections (even naming dropping a few) to contact Eilish and get the teen another shirt. Meghan was delighted when the singer sent not one T-shirt, but several as well as some signed merchandise.
Michael Deacon, columnist and assistant editor for The Telegraph, joined the growing chorus of commentators and experts who condemned the duchessâs choice to post the video saying: âVery cruelly, a lot of people accuse Meghan Markle of being fake, artificial, insincere. I, however, think those people are wrong. I think she means every word she says. But thatâs the problem. Sheâs so madly earnest, she has no idea how ridiculous she sounds.â
Deacon then opined that to him the video was âoddâ because instead of doing this behind the scenes and presenting the teen with the gifts, Meghan had to make a big fuss about it by broadcasting what she did.
He said: âThough, thereâs something a tiny bit odd about a multimillionaire duchess making such a big song and dance about managing to procure a few bits of pop merchandise â and then hastily making a video for Instagram about it, to ensure that the entire world gets to hear about her selfless generosity.
âMeghan could have just sorted out the T-shirt, then posted it to the girl, without alerting everyone else on the planet to this momentous act of philanthropy. Yet, for whatever reason, she simply couldnât resist letting us all know what sheâd done.â

Author and literary editor of the Spectator Alexander Larman also had some opinions about Meghanâs video and accused her of using the tragedy in LA and this story as just some good Instagram content for her account.
He wrote: âThe disaster has attracted a small but vocal number of people who ostensibly have offered their time and resources to provide much-needed assistance â but in reality seem more interested in creating content to share on their social media. Meghan Markle, predictably enough, belongs to that category.
âThere is something so nauseatingly contrived, so fake â so actressy â about the little smiles to the camera, the faux-excitement, the casual name-dropping of famous friends and, finally, the idea that some signed trinkets can in some way compensate for a truly epochal disaster. It screams of consumerism and fakery: both things, by now, that the Duchess has intimately associated herself with.â
