Ezno Maresca provides huge Cole Palmer injury update after secret Chelsea chat
Enzo Maresca has shed light on Cole Palmer, who raised eyebrows when he beelined for the dressing rooms after coming off against Leicester City
Enzo Maresca provided an injury update on Cole Palmer following Chelsea's 1-0 win over Leicester City. The 22-year-old midfielder looked a shadow of his old self when the Blues locked horns with the Foxes at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
Palmer missed the first penalty of his senior career in the first half, ending a run of 12 successful spot-kicks. Mads Hermansen denied the England international from 12 yards after Victor Kristiansen brought down Jadon Sancho inside the box.
Fortunately for Palmer, Marc Cucurella eventually fired Chelsea ahead on the hour mark, finding the bottom right corner from range. The former Manchester City ace was later replaced by Tyrique George with a quarter of an hour left to play, and he headed straight down the tunnel.
Palmer raised eyebrows when he beelined for the changing rooms, but Maresca has shed light on his player's situation. Speaking to reporters after the game, the Blues boss said: "It's very easy: Cole, yesterday, didn't train and during the night, he didn't feel well.
"The reason why he didn't train yesterday is because he didn't feel well. This morning, he woke up and he asked me, 'I want to be on the pitch because I want to help this team, this club, to play Champions [in the] League'.
"So in the last two days, he was completely out. Fever, is it something I can say in English? Diarrhoea. In the last 48 hours, he didn't train with the fever and this bad feeling."
Then, circling back on his behind-the-scenes chat with Palmer, Maresca added: "This morning, he asked to play the game and this shows how these players want to bring the club where it belongs to."
On the win over Leicester City, claiming three crucial points in the race for Champions League qualification, the Chelsea boss said: "Yeah, very happy. Very happy. The main reason is because when we prepare the game, we watch as many games as possible.
"We watched the Leicester games under Ruud [van Nistelrooy], almost all of the games since he arrived and you can imagine how many games. They play always a line of four but they arrived here with a line of five and they completely changed their plan.
"All the training sessions you have done, they go rubbish. You need a new plan. Before the warm-up, before the players go out, you need to give them a new plan.
"This is why I was so happy because the way the players adapted - that is something you probably struggle to see and understand from the outside - has been top, fantastic; you have to completely change the plan, the way you attack and the way you defend.
"Leicester came here with a line of five. This is something, I said to the players, it is probably the other teams starting to respect us. Copenhagen, three years with the same manager and there was two games with a line of five... we play there, a line of five.
"So, the players have been so good this season in the way they are adapting. I feel really sorry for Leicester because I will always be thankful for them. But the reason why is because of this.
"They come here thinking they can surprise us but the players adapted fantastic and this is the reason why I was so happy..."
