Football vs Baseball: Superman Has a Favorite Sport That You'd Never Guess
Superman's sport of choice has been revealed.
When it comes to sports, Superman has often been associated with American football and baseball, but his real favorite is actually soccer. The Man of Steel's true athletic passion has been unveiled at last, and in a surprising twist, it isn't America's pastime. Instead, one of DC's writers believes that Superman would prefer a less obvious sport as his hobby of choice.
In an interview with AIPT, Absolute Superman writer Jason Aaron discusses his take on the iconic DC hero in the all-new Absolute Universe and answers questions about the character. When asked about what hobbies this version of Superman would have as opposed to the original, Aaron says, "I think he’d be into soccer."
Football or baseball are the expected answers to the question of what Superman's most beloved sport would be, but according to Aaron, soccer is the preferred activity for his interpretation of Kal-El. DC fans can lay this debate to rest, because Superman's love for soccer is now official.
Superman's Favorite Sport Is Soccer In DC's Absolute UniverseAmerican Football Is Great, But Superman Likes The Other Version Better
While soccer is an unexpected pick for Superman's favorite sport, it makes sense for his Absolute counterpart. After all, unlike Clark Kent, Kal-El wasn't raised by the Kent family in Smallville. Aaron explains:
Kal has spent more time in countries outside the U.S., and he’s probably developed some sweet soccer skills. He could do some serious headers, that’s for sure.
Rather than growing up in an all-American town, Kal has traveled across the globe, taking refuge in different countries and acquainting himself with their varied cultures. As a result, the sport he's taken a liking to isn't one that's heavily embroiled in American customs. Instead, Absolute Superman shows a preference for soccer, which tends to be more popular in Brazil, England, Argentina, and numerous other countries around the world.

The Daily Planet has been a key part of the Superman mythos for decades, and now it is poised to undergo its biggest expansion in DC history.
Absolute Superman's more worldly upbringing serves as one of the key distinguishing attributes that separates him from the classic Superman from DC lore. Krypton was destroyed later in his life in this revamped continuity, and as such, he views it as his home in a way that he typically doesn't in other stories. Therefore, he lacks a singular home on Earth because Krypton is his home first and foremost. Superman may feel like more of an outsider on the planet than ever before, but his love of soccer suggests that he's found aspects of Earth that he appreciates.
Absolute Superman Enjoys Soccer, But The Original Superman Prefers Baseball
While Jason Aaron's Superman harbors a fondness for soccer, DC's classic Superman would beg to differ on the subject of his favorite sport. Superman's Smallville connection causes him to be associated with more American sports, like baseball, rather than soccer. Superman himself has even discussed the love he has for that sport in "Opening Day" by Cameron Chittock and Marco Santucci from DC’s Spring Breakout anthology. As he tells Jimmy, Clark associates baseball games with a sense of belonging. These versions of Superman might disagree on what sport they like better, but at least they both agree that sports help them feel at home on Earth.
