Forest reach FA Cup semi-finals after Matz Sels heroics in Brighton shootout
Nottingham Forest will face Everton in the FA Cup semi-finals after Matz Sels' penalty heroics against Brighton secured a 4-3 shoot-out win after a goalless draw
Matz Sels emerged as Nottingham Forest's penalty saviour once more, helping the team reach the FA Cup semi-finals for the first time in 34 years.
The Belgian shot-stopper denied Brighton's Jack Hinshelwood and Diego Gomez from the spot, leading Forest to a 4-3 victory on penalties following a goalless draw at the Amex Stadium.
Sels had previously made key saves in penalty shoot-outs against Exeter and Ipswich in the earlier rounds.
His heroics had Forest celebrating like it was 1991, the last time they made it to the competition's semi-finals under the guidance of Brian Clough.
Stuart Pearce, a member of that 1991 squad, was present at the Amex, providing radio commentary and looking healthy after his recent health scare.
Being well-acquainted with penalty shoot-outs, Pearce would have relished the thrilling climax, despite the preceding 120 minutes of play.
Brighton dominated possession but struggled to make it count, while Forest were content to sit back.
This match was far from a repeat of Forest's 7-0 thrashing of Brighton in their Premier League encounter last month. However, the visitors did create the first chance 15 minutes in when Ola Aina set up Taiwo Awoniyi, Chris Wood's replacement.
Awoniyi's angled shot was thwarted by Seagulls keeper Bart Verbruggen, with Neco Williams failing to capitalise on the rebound.
On the other end, Yasin Ayari's strike from the edge of the box seemed destined for the bottom corner until it was deflected wide by Murillo.
Pervis Estupinan unleashed a 25-yard shot that swerved and dipped in front of Sels, prompting the Forest keeper to make an unconventional save.
After half-time, Brighton's Georginio Rutter narrowly missed from a corner, while Hinshelwood sent another wide. Verbruggen managed to tip over a powerful strike from Morgan Gibbs-White.
An hour into the game, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Anthony Elanga were brought on to inject some energy, and within three minutes, Forest was awarded a penalty. Kaoru Mitoma slid into Elliot Anderson, knocking him down with his elbow.
Referee Peter Bankes initially awarded the penalty but reversed his decision after reviewing the incident on the pitchside monitor, concluding there wasn't enough contact.
Gibbs-White then set Elanga off on a run, but Verbruggen was quick to block his attempt. As extra time loomed, Brighton were hanging on by a thread, with Gibbs-White just missing a chance to convert Elanga's cross at the far post.
In stoppage time, Jan Paul van Hecke cleared a goalbound header from the England hopeful.
Extra time saw a header from Gomez pushed over by Sels as the closest anyone got to scoring a winner.
During the penalty shootout, Sels saved a shot from Hinshelwood. Despite Williams shooting over the bar, the visiting keeper blocked a shot from Gomez before captain Ryan Yates secured Forest's progression.
