Former Cleveland Browns star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. has been diagnosed with seborrheic dermatitis, a lifelong but treatable skin condition.
Beckham Jr. revealed the news of his diagnosis in an exclusive interview with Prevention, a health lifestyle magazine.
Seborrheic dermatitis is a noncontagious skin condition that causes itchy red patches and greasy scales on your skin, as well as white or yellow crusty or powdery flakes on your scalp, according to the Cleveland Clinic. The condition occurs in about 11% of the population.
âWhen I found out millions of others had this condition, it kind of just simplified it for me in not being embarrassed and just doing what we have to do,â Beckham Jr. told Prevention, adding that he first began noticing symptoms at age 26 in 2018.
âOver the last couple of years, I was like, okay, this is not something I could just, you know, grab some vitamin E oil for,â he said.
Fortunately, seborrheic dermatitis is highly treatable. Prevention notes while there is no cure for the condition, it can be managed with anti-fungal shampoos, topical steroids and more.
Prior to his diagnosis, Beckham Jr. said he considered shaving his signature beard to see if his skin was irritated, and also considered getting a facial.
âI never wanted to shave my beard,â Beckham Jr. said. âSo Iâm happy I didnât have to do that.â
The former NFL star said he discovered a medication named Zoryve about a year-and-a-half ago which has helped managed his condition. Beckham Jr. has also partnered with the company.
âEver since then, itâs not something I really even worry about,â he said.
While it took Beckham Jr. years to get diagnosed with seborrheic dermatitis and receive the treatment needed to manage it, he encourages others to seek answers for questions or concerns they may have about their own health.
âI feel like I was put on this earth to help others and bring them up,â he said. âYouâre not the only one in this world (struggling). Seek a medical professional for advice, find out what works for you, and just know there are options and solutions out there to help you with what you have going on.â
Beckham Jr. just completed his 10th season in the NFL, playing in nine games for the Miami Dolphins before they granted his request to be released on Dec. 13. He previously played for the Baltimore Ravens, Los Angeles Rams (where he won Super Bowl LVI in Feb. 2022), Browns and New York Giants.
For his 10-year NFL career, Beckham Jr. has 575 catches for 7,987 yards and 59 touchdowns, along with 23 rushes for 170 yards and one touchdown.
