Four female footballers killed by lightning after standing under tree in storm
A man who was also with them later died in the hospital, and two other women sustained severe burns, according to local news outlets.
Tragedy struck when four female footballers were killed by lightning while sheltering under a tree during a storm. Jeidy Morales, Daniela Mosquera, Luz Lame and Etelvina Mosquera had taken refuge in a pitch-side shed due to bad weather disrupting their game in Cajibio, Colombia.
A devastating lightning bolt hit a nearby tree resulting in their deaths. A man who was also with them later died in the hospital, and two other women sustained severe burns, according to local news outlets.
Heartfelt tributes have been paid to the victims who were partaking in a football tournament, reports the Mirror. A grieving friend wrote online: "What sad news. Rest in peace Daniela."
This incident follows another recent tragedy where a player was killed by lightning during a football match in Peru, leaving five others injured. The group of players was hit as they were leaving the pitch after the match was paused by the referee.
Video footage captured the shocking moment when eight players fell after a loud bang.
In a similar harrowing event back in 2021, nine year old Jordan Banks from Blackpool, Lancashire, met his untimely death after being hit by lightning at a football coaching session. His stepfather witnessed the horrific scene from his car.
Jordan was celebrated for his charitable fundraising efforts and paying homage to his policing heroes, and following his passing, football stars came forward to support his bereaved family.
