Friends star was actually first choice for Harrison Ford's Indiana Jones role
An actor originally meant to play the part of an iconic movie character before a scheduling conflict meant the role went to Harrison Ford
It has been revaled that an iconic film role that could have seen a Friends celebrity wielding the whip was snatched up by none other than Harrison Ford.
The seasoned star, famed for his roles in classics such as The Fugitive, Shrinking, and Witness, might have been overlooked for one of his most colossal roles if not for the first-choice actor's scheduling issues.
Ford's portrayal as the adventurous archaeologist spanned five films, yet some cinephiles believe the original contender would have been equally remarkable.
In a revelation on the r/movies subreddit, enthusiasts exchanged stories of casting what-ifs, spotlighting the Friends actor who nearly donned the fedora instead before committing to a celebrated TV series.
A Reddit user wrote: "Harrison Ford wasn't supposed to play either Han Solo or Indiana Jones. For Han Solo, he was there to help actors audition lines and Lucas ended up casting him. Tom Selleck was originally cast as Indiana Jones, but had to drop out to do Magnum PI."
Selleck, known to Friends fans as Richard Burke, let go of the Indiana Jones mantle. Some supporters speculate he could have excellently filled the part.
One comment reads: "Unpopular opinion but Tom Selleck would have been great in that role. Back then he was sexy and charismatic."
Others, conversely, argued Selleck may have brought too much poise to convey the character authentically, with another adding their perspective: "I don't know. Selleck is a men's man.
"Ford looks like he's way in over his head all the time but looks exactly like a scoundrel, someone you know will wiggle himself out of any situation with a smile and some charm. Ford is magnetic and he looks like an every guy."
Critics have often noted that Harrison Ford constantly appears out of depth, but simultaneously embodies the classic scoundrel— someone who would triumphantly navigate any predicament with a grin and effortless charm.
Another admirer added: "That's the charm of Solo and Jones. You see yourself there but you can't possibly imagine yourself as Selleck. He was the perfect choice, plus Ford's charisma is legendary. No wonder it's impossible to recast his roles, as hard as studios have tried."
A bit of Hollywood history reflects on the impact of actors' scheduling conflicts, notably during the filming of Magnum PI, which collided with Raiders of the Lost Ark. Recounting the turn of events one fan shared: "It goes further. CBS had Tom under contract and shipped him to Oahu in July and the Actor's strike shuts down Magnum's production almost immediately."
"Raiders was unaffected because it was filming in Europe starting in June and didn't film in the States until the strike was over. With the delays to Magnum due to the strike, he could've shot Raiders and still been back to Hawaii in time to shoot Magnum."
Another added: "The funny/sad part is that the start of Magnum wound up getting pushed back, so he could still have done both. But by then it was too late."
