American Murder: Gabby Petito official Netflix trailer
Gabby Petito, 22, could have been saved by a witness who informed the police of a domestic dispute a few weeks before her tragic death. The young woman and her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, 23, had been traveling throughout the United States sharing their adventures on social media when she went missing on September 11, 2021.
Just days later, Brian vanished, and an arrest warrant was issued for him on September 23, following the discovery of Gabby's strangled body. In October, his remains were found in a Florida nature reserve, accompanied by a notebook containing a confession to Gabby's murder.
The heart-breaking reality behind their seemingly idyllic life, as portrayed on Instagram, will be unravelled in the upcoming Netflix documentary American Murder: Gabby Petito, released on Monday, February 17.

The witness reported seeing Brian strike Gabby and attempt to seize her phone so he could leave her at a co-op in Moab.
Police audio recordings show that Brian did indeed hit his fiancée during the incident in Utah. However, the authorities fell short of effectively intervening, reports the Mirror.
The couple were pulled over due to domestic abuse claims (Image:

As inquiries intensified, it was verified that Gabby had supposedly been hit. The dispatcher informed: "Phone number is [redacted], name's [redacted].
"I'm not sure, but the female who got hit, they both, the male and the female both got into the van and headed north."
This disclosure has since sparked significant backlash against the conduct of the officers on scene. According to state legislation, police are compelled to make an arrest or issue a citation if they believe a domestic violence incident has taken place.
The duo revealed they had been fighting that morning (Image:

Police bodycam footage revealed an emotional Gabby conceding that she'd struck Brian, explaining: "We've just been fighting this morning. Some personal issues."
A distraught Gabby poured her heart out to the officer while Brian appeared in the bodycam footage chuckling and bantering with the authorities.
Speaking about the strain in their relationship, Gabby disclosed: "We have been fighting all morning and he wouldn't let me in the car before."
Gabby confided in the officials, assuring them Brian "really stresses her out" and mentioned their "rough morning". She confirmed during the dispute that she had hit Brian, while Brian amiably told the police that he had shoved Gabby multiple times simply to create distance between them.
The officers noted physical signs of their squabble - Brian's body displayed scratch marks on his hands, arm, and torso.
Gabby was visibly upset while talking to the police (Image:

Police records reportedly indicate that Brian was seen as the victim and Gabby as the suspect. The authorities decided against making any arrests, instead recommending that the pair take some time apart.
The incident was officially recorded as a "mental/emotional health break" rather than a domestic assault case.
Criminal defence lawyer Phillip Holloway shared his thoughts with Fox News, suggesting that the officers' handling of the situation might have changed Gabby's fate.
He stated: "An eyewitness saw Brian using physical violence against Gabby and other information suggested that she was also involved in some type of mutual combat [with Brian]. At a bare minimum, the investigation on the side of the road developed, I believe, probable cause that would have been sufficient to charge one or both of them with some type of domestic violence."
Holloway posited that a different approach could have "changed the trajectory" of what happened to Gabby, potentially saving her life.
