Netflix just dropped the harrowing three-parter American Murder: Gabby Petito on its platform yesterday (February 17), delving into the tragic case of the 22-year-old American vlogger Gabby Petito, who was killed on a road trip with her fiance Brian Laundrie.
The documentary series uncovers previously unseen text messages and diary entries, along with interviews from Gabby's family members about the events leading to her untimely death.
The young woman vanished on August 27, triggering a nationwide search to bring her back.
Jim Schmidt, Gabby's stepfather, recounts in the last episode the gut-wrenching moment he was informed that his daughter had been found deceased.
In a heart-rending disclosure, he said: "The morning of the 19th, they told us that they had found remains consistent with our daughter Gabby, and I said, 'Are you sure? You have to be sure because I have to make this call'," reports Surrey Live.

Netflix)He continued: "And he said, 'I'm going to show you this and I don't want to, but there's some stuff on here that maybe you can identify'. It was Gabby lying on the ground, on her left side, in a fetal position, her hair coming out of her hood, which was on her head, lying there on the ground for weeks in the wild."
Jim recounted the raw emotion, "Just left there like she was a piece of trash by someone who was supposed to love her, and I collapsed on the ground."
The devastating scene ended with Jim weeping as he was consoled by his wife and Gabby's mother, Nichole Schmidt.
He revealed the harrowing experience: "I had to pick up the phone, compose myself, call Nicky and get Joe on the phone and Tara in a conference call and tell them from 2,000 miles away that our daughter was dead. It was the worst phone call I've ever made in my life."

Netflix)The documentary also sheds light on some early red flags in Gabby and Brian's relationship, as seen through the eyes of her friends.
One friend, Rose Davis, commented on the dynamic, "It felt like a parent was watching us on a play date. It was very weird, but he was very nice."
She recalled a conversation with her mother, "I do remember coming home and telling my mum, she said, 'Oh was it?' and I said, 'He's a really nice guy, but I feel like there's something off about him."
Rose added, delving into the darker aspects they observed, "That started becoming clearer and clearer as our friendship progressed. There was a really dark side of him."
