Gene Hackman 911 call in full as distressed caretaker makes plea to cops

The full audio of the distressing 911 call to police reporting the discovery of Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa has been released.
Gene died at the age of 95 at his mansion in Santa Fe, New Mexico, while Betsy was just 63. A caretaker at the property was the one to sound the alarm, calling police when he spotted a woman laying on the floor as he looked through a window into the property.
âSanta Fe 911. What is the emergency?â the operator asked, with the caretaker responding: âHello, my name is [redacted], Iâm the caretaker for Santa Fe Summit up here about [unintelligible]. I think we just found two or one deceased person inside the house.â
âWhatâs the address here?â the operator asked, and was told: âThereâs no address, Iâm going to wait for you at the gate. Iâm going to wait for you, please send somebody real quick.â

NY Daily News via Getty Images)âIs the person a male or a female?â questioned the call handler, as the citizen again urged: âA female and a male probably, I donât know. I donât know, sir, just send somebody up here real quick.â
âOkay, are they awake?,â asked the 911 handler, with the caretaker responding: âI have no idea.â The operator then asked if they were âbreathing,â and the caller explained: âI have no idea, Iâm not inside the house. Itâs closed, itâs locked. I canât go in, but I see them laying⌠sheâs laying down on the floor from the window.â
Following the call, the Santa Fe County Sheriff's attended the property and confirmed the deaths in a statement, which said: âOn February 26, 2025 at approximately 1:45 p.m., Santa Fe County Sheriffâs deputies were dispatched to an address on Old Sunset Trail in Hyde Park where Gene Hackman, 95 and his wife Betsy Arakawa, 64, and a dog were found deceased.â
It was later revealed that Betsy was found decomposing with bloating to her face and mummification on her hands and feet, with Gene in a similar state of decomposition. An autopsy has since been carried out which ruled out any external trauma to both the actor and his late wife, but hasnât yet established a cause of death.
Geneâs family previously suspected that a gas leak was responsible for the tragic deaths, but it seems unlikely. The Santa Fe City Fire Department underwent testing to determine if there were signs of a possible carbon monoxide leak, but said in a report that they found no signs of one.
The report states: "He advised the fire department did not locate signs of a carbon monoxide leak or poisoning⌠as of now, there are no signs or evidence indicating there were any problems associated to the pipes in and around the residence." Santa Fe Sheriff Aron Mendoza added: "We're not going to guess this was an accident or natural causes. It wasn't typical."
