Gene Hackman death: What we know as body found 'mummified'
The two-time Oscar winner and author was confirmed dead in his Santa Fe home alongside his wife and their dog on Thursday.

The death of Hollywood actor Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa at their US home has left several mysteries unanswered.
The two-time Oscar winner was confirmed dead alongside his wife and their dog at their home in New Mexico just after midnight on Thursday.

The pair, who had been married since 1991, were discovered by maintenance workers, Roland Lowe Begay and Jesse Kesler, who alerted police and confirmed they'd not seen the couple alive for several weeks.
MummificationGrim details have now emerged that the couple were found partially-mummified at their home, with pills strewn in their bathroom.

The arrest warrant revealed Arakawa, 64, was discovered decomposed with bloating on her face and mummification in her hands and feet.
Mummification occurs when a person's skin and tissues are preserved after their death.
Officials confirmed Hackman, 95, was found to have the same signs of decomposition, but was found separate to her inside the home.

Deaths ruled suspiciousInitially, the Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza said that no foul play was suspected, although a search warrant affidavit has since ruled their deaths âsuspiciousâ and further investigation is required.
The affidavit also confirmed that the front door of their home was found unsecured and open, with no immediate signs of breaking and entering.

Officers discovered a space heater next to Arakawa's head, which investigators believe may have fallen.
Hackman was found dead in a mud room off the couple's kitchen, according to the warrant.

Carbon monoxide theoryThe Superman star was fully clothed, in grey sweat pants, a blue in color long-sleeve t-shirt, brown slippers. His sunglasses and walking cane were found next to his body, suggesting he may have died of a sudden fall.
Arakawa was wearing dark grey sweatpants and a light-coloured sweatshirt.

Elizabeth Jean Hackman, their daughter, speculated that her father and stepmother may have been killed in a carbon monoxide leak. However, firefighters could find no sign of a gas leak.
A German Shepherd was also found near Arakawa, in a closet in the bathroom. Two other dogs were reportedly found alive and "healthy".

Police said in a statement: "On February 26, 2025 at approximately 1:45 p.m., Santa Fe County Sheriffâs deputies were dispatched to an address on Old Sunset Trail in Hyde Park where Gene Hackman, 95 and his wife Betsy Arakawa, 64 and a dog were found deceased."
Sheriff Mendoza added: "All I can say is that we're in the middle of a preliminary death investigation, waiting on approval of a search warrant," and shared "I want to assure the community and neighbourhood that there's no immediate danger to anyone."
"Foul play is not suspected as a factor in those deaths at this time however exact cause of death has not been determined. This is an active and ongoing investigation by the Santa Fe County Sheriffâs Office."

The official results of the post-mortem examinations and toxicology reports are yet to be released, with the cause of death yet to be determined, according to the Sheriff's Office.
Over the years, Gene picked up two BAFTAs as well as four Golden Globes, three awards at the National Board of Review Awards, and a Screen Actors Guild Award. He picked up a number of film critic awards too. Gene was born in 1930 and signed up to the army after lying about his age.

After years at service, he then turned to acting, where he met Dustin Hoffman at a local theatre, the Pasadena Playhouse. His role in roadway show Any Wednesday in 1964 shot him to fame. Thereafter, he signed up for his debut film Lilith.
From there, he appeared in Bonnie and Clyde in the late 60s, which saw him garner his first Oscar nomination. Another nod came just a few years later for his part in I Never Sang for My Father.

He also acted in The Poseidon Adventure , Scarecrow, The Conversation, A Bridge Too Far, Under Fire, Power and Loose Cannons. Gene and Betsy had been married since 1991, but the pair mainly kept out of the spotlight.
The reclusive star had been spotted making some rare appearances including a lunch out at a restaurant near to their home. Gene's last movie aired in 2004, a comedy called Welcome To Mooseport where he starred alongside Ray Romano and Christine Baranski. It wasn't until years later he confirmed his retirement.
