Gene Hackman police update as detective says star may have fallen
The French Connection star was found at home with wife Betsy Arakawa in Santa Fe, where police have been carrying out searches after their deaths
A detective who searched the home in New Mexico of Gene Hackman says he may have fallen before his death. Deputies have executed a search warrant at the property in Santa Fe.
Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa, 63, were found dead there in separate rooms. A dog was also found dead in a kennel, although two other dogs were still alive, local investigators told the New York Times today.
No cause of death has so far been announced. However, police say they do not suspect foul play.
Yet Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza told the New York Times the deaths were 'not typical'. And now a detective believes Hackman, who was fully clothed, may have fallen as his glasses were thrown from his body.
It appears their bodies had lain undiscovered for some time, new updates from police say. Associated Press report that Hackman, 95, was found dead in a so-called mudroom - a room near the front entrance where people remove their shoes.
Betsy Arakawa, 63, was found lying on her right side in a ground-floor bathroom with a black space heater nearby. Officers think it could have fallen off the counter if she fell abruptly.
Police discovered an opened orange prescription bottle left on the counter with pills scattered on the surface, the Associated Press say. Due to the state of her body, authorities believe Arakawa may have been dead for some time before police found her and Hackman. The actor was found in a separate room off the kitchen.
A statement from the Santa Fe County Sheriff in New Mexico earlier today said there is an âactive investigationâ into the death of two-time Oscar winning actor Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa. Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza said there was no suicide note and no obvious signs of trauma to their bodies. "At this stage in the process there isn't anything obvious like that," he said. "The autopsy is going to tell us more."
The sheriff's department said that checks were carried out by the fire department and the gas company before officers entered the property, to ensure it was safe to enter. The sheriff said: "We're not going to guess this was an accident or natural causes. It wasn't typical."
No sign of gunshot or other kinds of wounds say Gene Hackman police
Denise Avila, a sheriffâs office spokesperson, has also told media there was no indication that any of them had been shot or had other types of wounds. The police department said: earlier today âWe can confirm that both Gene Hackman and his wife were found deceased Wednesday afternoon at their residence on Sunset Trail.
âThis is an active investigation. However, at this time we do not believe that foul play was a factor.â
The deaths have shocked Hollywood. American filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola said: âThe loss of a great artist, always cause for both mourning and celebration: Gene Hackman a great actor, inspiring and magnificent in his work and complexity.
âI mourn his loss, and celebrate his existence and contribution.â This evening, the Prince of Wales said he is "so sad" to hear of the death of Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy. In a post signed with a "W", to his shared X account with the Princess of Wales, he said: "So sad to hear the news of the death of Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy. Hackman was a true genius of film who brought each and every character to life with power, authenticity and star quality."
