Gene Hackman was found dead at the age of 95 alongside his wife Betsy Arakawa, 64, and one of their pet dogs, with two others alive on their property in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
The fate of the two living German Shepherds has now been revealed after the discovery of the bodies on Wednesday, with a press release claiming that the Santa Fe County Animal Control Division is working with the actor's family to “ensure the safety of the two dogs."
One of the dogs was found alive next to Arakawa's body in the bathroom, with another running loose on the grounds - while a third, unfortunately, was discovered dead in a closet adjoining the bathroom - the closet being only 10 to 15 feet away from Betsy.
Betsy was found lying on their bathroom floor with an open bottle of prescription pills scattered across a countertop. Currently, it remains unclear what the pills were and whether they had been prescribed to Betsy or Gene. Meanwhile, the actor was found in a mud room off their kitchen.

It was later revealed that Betsy was found decomposing with bloating to her face and mummification on her hands and feet, with Gene in a similar state of decomposition. An autopsy has since been carried out which ruled out any external trauma to both the actor and his late wife, but hasn’t yet established a cause of death.
The police department has ruled out foul play and also said that they found no evidence of a gas leak. Santa Fe Sheriff Aron Mendoza has shared: "We're not going to guess this was an accident or natural causes. It wasn't typical."
Gene and Betsy were known to be animal lovers, and had dogs throughout their relationship after tying the knot in 1991. At one point the duo had two pet dogs, before Gene famously adopted a third furry friend while filming The Replacements in Baltimore alongside Keanu Reeves in 1999.
While the pair were filming, two stray dogs walked onto the set. Gene initially took them to an animal shelter, which named the dogs Gene and Keanu after the starring pair. Later, Betsy and Gene made the decision to adopt the dog named Gene.
Animal Rescue Inc, the shelter which Gene and Betsy adopted their dog from, shared a birthday message to Gene on January 30 this year. In a Facebook post, the animal rescue shelter wrote: "Happy 94th birthday to our most famous adopter Gene Hackman !! While filming The Replacements in Baltimore in 1999, two stray dogs wandered onto the movie set. Both dogs were transported to us via limousine and the Hackmans came up the following week and adopted one of them.#adoptdontshop."
