Gene Hackman, wife dead for some time before bodies were discovered
Investigators believe actor Gene Hackman and his wife had been dead for some time before their bodies were discovered in their Santa Fe, New Mexico, home on Wednesday. No official ruling has been made on the cause of death.
SANTA FE, N.M. â Sheriffâs officials believe actor Gene Hackman, his wife and one of their dogs were dead for some time before a maintenance worker found their bodies in their Santa Fe home on Wednesday.
Sheriffâs office spokeswoman Denise Avila said there was no indication they had been shot or had any wounds.
Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza has not officially ruled anything out at this point in the investigation, Parade magazine said. But a search warrant affidavit asserted that their deaths were âsuspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigationâ due to all of the âcircumstances surroundingâ the scene, ABC News said.
Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, both showed âobvious signs of death,â ABC News said, citing the search warrant affidavit.
Investigators are âkeeping everything on the table,â Mendoza told reporters on Thursday. While he would not speculate how long they had been dead, the said âsounds like they had been deceased for a while,â ABC News said.
Hackman, 95, was found dead Wednesday in a mudroom, The Associated Press said.

A deputy observed that Hackman appeared to have fallen. He was wearing a blue T-shirt, gray sweatpants and slippers. A pair of sunglasses and a cane were nearby.
Arakawa, 63, was found in a bathroom next to a space heater, Santa Fe County Sheriffâs Office detectives wrote in a search warrant.
There was an open prescription bottle and pills scattered on a countertop near Arakawa.
A dead German shepherd was found in a bathroom closet near Arakawa, investigators said. Two healthy dogs were found on the property â one inside and one outside.
Hackmanâs middle child, Elizabeth Jean Hackman, told Parade that although there has been no official rulings in the case, she and her siblings suspect that a carbon monoxide buildup may have caused her fatherâs death.
âHe was loved and admired by millions around the world for his brilliant acting career, but to us he was always just Dad and Grandpa,â the family. We will miss him sorely and are devastated by the loss,â his daughters and granddaughter said in a statement Thursday.
Hackmanâs breakout role was in the 1967 film âBonnie and Clyde,â portraying Buck Barrow, Clyde Barrowâs brother. He was nominated as best supporting actor, his first Oscar nomination, for his work.
He also received nominations for âI Never Sang for My Fatherâ (1970) and âMississippi Burningâ (1988).
He won two Oscars, first for his role as Jimmy âPopeyeâ Doyle in the 1971 thriller âThe French Connectionâ and as an antagonistic sheriff in the âUnforgiven.â
âThereâs no identifiable quality that makes Mr. Hackman stand out,â critic Janet Maslin wrote in The New York Times in 1988. âHe simply makes himself outstandingly vital and real.â
