Gene Hackmanâs Hit '90s Thriller That Paired Him With Will Smith Is Trending On Streaming Following The Acting Legendâs Tragic Passing
Hackman has an iconic filmography.
Gene Hackman's death has been among the biggest tragedies that have hit Hollywood so far this year. When he was found dead on February 26, the actor was 95 years old. In his life, he had a decades-long career that began with an uncredited role as a cop in the 1961 movie Mad Dog Coll. From there, Hackman played a series of small roles in TV shows and movies before having one of his first breakout roles playing a supporting character in Bonnie and Clyde, which earned him his first Oscar nomination.
Four years after Bonnie and Clyde, Hackman would go on to play Jimmy Doyle in The French Connection, a part which would solidify his stardom. After having been nominated for Oscars for his supporting roles in Bonnie and Clyde and I Never Sang for my Father, The French Connection would be what earned him his first Oscar win. He would later go on to be nominated for two more Oscars, winning again for his supporting role in Unforgiven. Now, one of Hackman's later works is trending on the streaming charts.
Hackman Played Opposite Will Smith
Enemy of the State is now a hit on streaming. The film came out in 1998, six years before Hackman retired from acting. The conspiracy thriller saw Hackman act alongside Will Smith, the latter of whom plays a lawyer who hires Hackman's Brill for surveillance operations. In addition to Hackman and Smith, Enemy of the State featured a leading cast including Lisa Bonet, Jon Voight, Regina King, and Gabriel Byrne. The film was fairly well-received, getting a 71% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes and a slightly higher 78% Popcornmeter.

This Proves The Strength Of Hackman's Legacy
While it's no surprise that movies like The French Connection, which was among Hackman's best-known works, are doing well with viewers at home, it is cool to see movies like Enemy of the State also doing well on streaming. This is later on in Hackman's career, and not usually the first film that comes to mind when listing his most iconic work. As such, the fact that it is also doing well on streaming exhibits the extent to which Hackman's legacy itself is carrying movies to success in the wake of his death, even if they are not his biggest titles.
