Leslie Charleson, star of General Hospital, is dead at 79. The showâs executive producer announced her death in a heartbreaking statement. The actress, who starred as Monica Quartermaine in the long-running soap opera, was the longest-serving cast member of the series, with an onscreen legacy spanning over 50 years. Joining the show in 1977, Leslie quickly spun her way into viewersâ hearts, rendering her role with grace and poise, earning her four Emmy nods.
Although her last appearance on the show was in December 2023, the star remained a constant presence in the series, with various references to her character being upstairs in the Quartermaine family mansion. All the while, fans knew little of her real-life health woes as she battled dilapidating ailments in her final years.

On Monday, Frank Valentini, the executive producer of General Hospital took to the showâs official Instagram page to confirm Leslie Charlesonâs death, describing her as a âdear friend and colleague,â while reminiscing on her âenduring legacy.â His statement read,
âIt is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of my dear friend and colleague, Leslie Charleson⌠Her enduring Legacy has spanned nearly 50 years on General Hospital alone and just as Monica was the heart of the Quarternaines, Leslie was a beloved matriarch of the entire cast and crew. I will miss our daily chats, her quick wit, and incredible presence on the set, On behalf of everyone at General Hospital, my heartfelt sympathy goes out to her loved ones during this difficult time.â
Leslie Charleson, born 1945 in Kansas City, Missouri discovered her knack for the performing arts in her early years. She delved into professional acting at nineteen, proceeding to study theatre at Bennett College, New York having nurtured her passion throughout her high school years. The star gradually made her way in the entertainment industry in the seventies, until landing her breakthrough role as Monica on General Hospital.
As Monica Quartermaine, Leslie Charleson embodied the beloved cardiologist at the fictional hospital, with a balanced mix of her characterâs career, personal struggles, and life within the wealthy Quartermine family making the soap opera more compelling to a wider audience. With time, her appearances reduced increasingly until her final appearance in a December 2023 episode. Behind the scenes, Leslie suffered a series of falls over the years that hindered her mobility, which was a major reason behind her fewer screen appearances. However, as the heart of the show for decades, writing her off ultimately was something no one was prepared for.
Hence, even at the height of her struggles, the actress never officially departed from General Hospital, a show that made her a household name for nearly five decades. Sadly, Leslie Charleson suffered yet another fall recently, leading to her hospitalization barely a week before she was announced dead per reports.
Aside from General Hospital, Leslie Charleson appeared in various popular American series, including The Rockford Files, Happy Days, As The World Turns, and Friends. Her humor and excellent line delivery made her stand out in her onscreen projects, keeping her relevant in the Hollywood scenes until her death at 79.
