Warning: Spoilers for Dark Winds season 3, episode 1!George R.R. Martin and Robert Redford make cameos in Dark Winds season 3, giving the AMC show an opportunity to hilariously complain about The Winds of Winter's delay. For those unaware, Martin and Redford are executive producers on the crime thriller series centered on the Navajo Tribal Police. In fact, Redford previously adapted books, on which Dark Winds is based, for previous movies and TV films. Though he's synonymous with the Game of Thrones franchise, Martin has been a major factor in Dark Winds' success.

Martin and Redford's surprising appearances occur in the first half of Dark Winds season 3's premiere episode. After Leaphorn and Chee fail to find George Bowlegs at his father's house, they go back to the station. Upon returning, Leaphorn pays a quick visit to two men in the station's small jail cell who are passing time by playing chess. The jailed men in Dark Winds' "Ye'iitsoh (Big Monster)" episode are none other than Martin and Redford, with the latter using the game to tie in an ongoing Game of Thrones delay.

How Dark Winds Pokes Fun At George R.R. Martin's Delays With The Winds Of WinterGRRM Knows How Long Fans Have Been Eagerly Waiting

During the Dark Winds season 3 cameo scene, Redford's character is waiting for Martin to make his next move before saying, "George, the whole world's waiting." Martin, with the help of Leaphorn, makes a move before proudly declaring "checkmate." With that, the cameo comes to an end but not before realizing Redford's Dark Winds "waiting" line is meant to call out Martin's continued delays with The Winds of Winter. The world isn't stuck waiting for Martin's chess move, they are waiting for the next installment in his A Song of Ice and Fire book series.

George R.R. Martin's stories have been a source of adaptations long before Game of Thrones and In the Lost Lands. Here's all of them, ranked.

The series, which was adapted into eight seasons of Game of Thrones, currently consists of five novels. The Winds of Winter has been in development for about 15 years now, so fans have been understandably frustrated regarding the lack of progress made in completing the next book. The last book, A Dance with Dragons released in 2011, the same year Game of Thrones debuted on HBO. Since then, the show ran eight seasons, the spinoff House of the Dragon aired two seasons, and other Game of Thrones spinoff shows went into development.

Dark Winds Is George R.R. Martin's Best Project Since Game Of Thrones (At Least With Critics)Dark Winds Has Been A Ratings Hit

With The Winds of Winter's ongoing delays, George R.R. Martin is fully aware of the disappointment that it hasn't been released yet. I'm sure his Dark Winds cameo might even cause some viewers to question why he's appearing in shows rather than locking himself away to finish the book. However, Martin has been involved in quite a few other projects since Game of Thrones ended. While one might assume much of his focus has been on House of the Dragon and other GOT projects (shows and other books), his most successful has been Dark Winds.

Martin might not be making as much progress on The Winds of Winter as many would like, but he's still very busy getting worthwhile shows made.

While House of the Dragon has been predominantly well-received by critics, Dark Winds currently has 100% on Rotten Tomatoes across its three seasons. Granted, House of the Dragon's audience score is a tad higher, coming in at 78% compared to Dark Winds' 70%, that could change when season 3 of the AMC garners more reviews. Martin might not be making as much progress on The Winds of Winter as many would like, but he's still very busy getting worthwhile shows made. For now, you'd need to be satisfied with Dark Winds instead of The Winds of Winter.
