Gerard Depardieu yesterday told a court he was too old and fat to sexually assault women. The French film actor is on trial accused of attacking two colleagues. He denies groping a 54-year-old set designer and a 34-year-old assistant producer on the set of The Green Shutters in 2021.
Depardieu told the court: “I’m not going to have fun at 76, or at 130 kilos [20.4 stone]. I’m unhappy enough. I’m not going to touch anyone’s butt, not on a set or anywhere else.” He added: “After what I’ve read about myself over the past three years, there’s no need to interpret.

But he said he may have grabbed her hips so as not to slip. When it was pointed out that a witness claimed she saw Depardieu pin the set designer between his thighs, the actor replied: “I would never put anything between my thighs.
“With the belly I have, I can’t put anything between my thighs.” The set designer said it felt like being in a “wolf trap” when Depardieu grabbed intimate parts of her body and verbally abused her. It was only thanks to security guards pulling Depardieu away that the assaults were not worse, she alleged.
Depardieu confirmed he later apologised for using obscene language in conversation with the set designer. He said: “There’s rudeness and vulgarity. I say the word p***y, for fun. I sometimes say it to myself.”
The assistant producer said she was molested three times, with Depardieu grabbing her buttocks and breasts.
He admitted being ashamed following the allegations, adding: “I push people around, I provoke. It’s rude to provoke, but I don’t want to make anyone cry.
“I haven’t worked for three years. I think the whole affair is being exploited by the media.” The star of Green Card, Cyrano de Bergerac and The Last Metro also suggested he was being hounded by the #MeToo movement, saying: “Feminist movements will become a terror.”
The case was adjourned in October, when a lawyer for Depardieu said he was ill with diabetes and a serious heart condition. If he is found guilty by the court in Paris, he faces up to five years in prison, and a €75,000 (£62,000) fine.
The trial, which began on Monday, continues. It is listed for two to three days, although the verdict may be withheld until later in the year. Depardieu is also set to stand trial at a later date for allegedly raping an actress.
He is also under investigation for tax fraud and money laundering.
