Grand National 2025 prize money: How much winning jockeys and owners are paid
The Grand National is one of the richest races in horse racing as huge sums of money are up for grabs at Aintree
This Saturday the biggest event of the horse racing calendar returns as all eyes turn to Aintree racecourse for the 2025 Grand National.
At 4pm on April 5 the 34 entrants will set off around the famous course to tackle the 16 fences.
Last year's winner, I Am Maximus is among the bookies' favouriytes, alongside the likes of Stumptown and Iroko, Hewick and Intense Raffles.
This is the race every jockey and owner wants to win, not only to write their name into the pantheon of horse racing history but for the massive prize pot available to them.
How much money is in the Grand National prize pot?
A total of £1 million is up for grabs which will be split out across the top ten finishers, meaning a little under a third of all entrants will leave the meeting with heavier pockets.
Here is a full breakdown of the prize money up for grabs at this year’s Grand National:
£500,000
£200,000
£100,000
£65,000
£40,000
£30,000
£20,000
£15,000
£10,000
£5,000
Who gets the biggest share of the prize?
In horse racing it is not the jockey who takes home the biggest payout. Instead the owner is awarded the entirety of the share from which the jockey takes home a percentage for their efforts.
Winning jockeys on average will take home about 8% of the winning pot while placed riders will take home around 4%.
This means the winning rider can expect to leave the event with a paycheck of around £40,000.
