Grand National jockey banned for racing injured horse that "had no more to give"

The 2025 Grand National saw Broadway Boy and Celebre D’Allen fall midway and receive extensive treatment from vets and one of the riders has now been hit with a suspension for his actions

Grand National jockey Michael Nolan has been slapped with a 10-day ban after his horse fell during the race with the stewards claiming the animal "appeared to have no more to give". Celebre D'Allen was one of two horses to fall during Saturday’s race at Aintree.

The animal was tended to by vets on the course before being walked to the horse ambulance. It then returned to the stables for further treatment.

A probe by the British Horse Racing Authority took a closer look at the incident that saw the horse collapse before the final hurdle with Nolan beijg handed a ban for his part in the race - and will now spend ten days away from the saddle.

A statement on Saturday evening read: “An enquiry was held to consider whether Micheal Nolan, the rider of Celebre D'Allen, had continued in the race when the horse appeared to have no more to give and was clearly losing ground after the second-last fence.

“The rider and the Veterinary Officer were interviewed, and recordings of the incident were viewed. The rider was suspended for 10 days.”

Celebre D’Allen was not the only horse to fall during the Grand National. Broadway Boy was also at the heart of a worrying fall after falling at the 25th fence. They both received extensive treatment on the course which delayed the next race of the day. But the outlook appeared to be more positive after the animal walked onto the horse ambulance.

Jockey Tom Bellamy was left needing hospital treatment. A Jockey Club spokesperson said: "Broadway Boy walked on to the horse ambulance and will return to the stables for further assessment. Celebre D'Allen walked on to the horse ambulance and has gone back to the stables for further assessment.

Away from those that fell, Nick Rockett ended up claiming victory in the Grand National despite outside odds of 33/1. Patrick Mullins was the winning jockey, helping trainer and father Willie Mullins to a third Grand National success of his long career. Speaking in an emotional interview with ITV, Mullins senior said: He said: "It was some result. It is lovely to be able to give your son a ride in the National, but to be able to win it is just unbelievable."

Speaking later, he added: “It doesn’t get any better than this. To father the winning riding, train the winning horse. The way we planned this with Stewart over ten bottles of wine in Australia. All great plans come together.”
