Gunman shot, wounded outside White House by Secret Service, described as ‘suicidal’
Secret Service agents received a tip from local police about a “suicidal individual” traveling from Indiana to Washington, D.C.
Secret Service agents shot and wounded a man near the White House early Sunday, according to a statement from the agency.
The feds say the man was armed with a gun and described him as “suicidal.” He has not been publicly identified and his condition was unknown.
President Trump was not at the White House on Sunday morning. He was at his Palm Beach, Fla., home of Mar-a-Lago.
The Secret Service said it received a tip from local law enforcement in Washington, D.C., about a “suicidal individual” who was traveling to the city from Indiana.
Just after midnight Sunday, agents spotted the man’s vehicle near 17th and F Streets NW. They then saw a man matching the suspect’s description walking down the street.
According to the Secret Service, agents approached the man and he pulled a gun. Secret Service agents then shot and wounded the man.
Though the agency described the incident as an “armed confrontation,” no Secret Service agents were wounded in the shooting.
The man was hospitalized with unspecified injuries.
Washington’s Metropolitan Police Department will investigate the shooting. The local department investigates all law enforcement shootings in the nation’s capital.
