But fear not, because a gut health guru has dished out an invaluable tip to avoid common blunders whilst shopping for olive oil - and that's all about scrutinising the label, reports the Express.
The TikTok influencer and gut health boffin Mr Gut Health, whos been vocal about his Mediterranean diet exploits for ages, disclosed how shoppers can spot authentic olive oil amidst the supermarket selection.
He pinpoints three essential indicators of genuine olive oil, stressing that the primary one is crucial.
According to the expert: "If it says extra virgin, then it's pretty much guaranteed."
Extra virgin is the gold standard, preserving the oil in its unrefined state, which means more of the flavor, vitamins and minerals stay intact, plus its crafted without the use of heat or chemicals.
Attention to the origin of olive oil is crucial, with clear labelling necessary. Demonstrating with a Filippo Berio bottle, an expert pointed out: "Some EVOO, like this one, uses olives from different countries."
"Whilst oil from the one country might be better for traceability, using olives from different countries is fine."
The third key aspect involves a telling sentence typically found on the reverse side of the bottle, which reveals the production method.
Turning the bottle around to read the label, the expert highlighted: "Superior category olive oil obtained directly from olives and solely by mechanical means."
This statement guarantees that the oil has been extracted in a way that conserves its nutritional benefits. The specialist also noted: "This ensures that the oil has been extracted properly to preserve its nutrients. And FYI, you can cook with EVOO, and it's much healthier to use than butter or tallow."
