HBO The Last of Us' Abby 'true motives' uncovered after menacing vow

The Last Of Us cast and crew have spoken out about Abby’s intentions that explosive season one finale which had devastating consequences.

Sky and HBO apocalyptic drama The Last Of Us has returned for its second season and five years have passed since Joel (played by Pedro Pascal) rescued Ellie (Bella Ramsey) from the Fireflies.

His initial mission was to transport Ellie safely to the hospital where Fireflies would turn her immunity into a cure but little did he know that the operation would kill her.

Now seeing Ellie as a daughter, he wasn’t ready to lose her, especially since his own daughter had already died, and so he massacred every Firefly in the hospital.

“We thought it was important to share right up front that there were real people impacted by Joel’s decisions and his actions”, series co-creator Mazin remarked in The Making Of The Last Of Us featurette, adding: “Who are they and basically what are they going to do next?”

Fellow co-creator Neil Druckmann continued: “This season is about the consequences of violence. How far would you go in the pursuit of justice when you are feeling righteous and just?”

Season two introduces Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) who is behind Abby, the daughter of Jerry Anderson, the Firefly surgeon who Joel murdered during his rampage in season one.

Left “broken” by her dad’s death, Mazin points out: “If she reminds you a little bit of say of what Joel felt like when he lost his daughter, well that’s not unintentional.

“When we lose somebody that’s been taken from us violently, for reasons that don’t seem fair or logical, the chain reaction begins.”

In the premiere episode, Abby is emotional as she stands over her dad’s grave when she tells another Firefly, referring to Joel: “You’ll help me find him."

So what will be his consequence if Abby does find him, and could it mean that Ellie will once again be in trouble?

Actress Kaitlyn Dever commented: “Abby is an extremely strong woman but also a person who is riddled with grief.

“The loss of her dad has sort of really taken over her life and that becomes the catalyst for her journey.”

The Last Of Us season 2 continues every Sunday on HBO in the US and every Monday at 9pm on Sky Atlantic and NOW.
