Hallmark Channel Stars Honor Late Director With Emotional Tributes: 'This One Hurts'
Hallmark Channel actors including Scott Wolf, Alicia Witt, and Kristoffer Polaha shared their memories and grief while paying tribute.
News of legendary Hollywood writer and director David Lynch’s death at 78 left the movie industry shocked and saddened on January 16, 2025. Many Hallmark Channel stars and alums, from Benjamin Ayres to Alicia Witt, expressed their grief and shared what a profound impact Lynch’s quirky, dark filmmaking and loving real-life presence had on them.
In 2024, Lynch announced that after a lifetime of smoking, he’d been diagnosed with emphysema and could no longer direct or even leave his house, per Variety. His best-known projects included the hit TV show “Twin Peaks” and many feature films, from “Blue Velvet” to “Mulholland Drive” to “Dune.”
Lynch’s family announced his death via Facebook, writing, “It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and the artist, David Lynch. We would appreciate some privacy at this time. There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us. But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.’ It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way.”

Witt was shaken by Lynch’s death, sharing two social media posts on January 16 about her experiences filming 1984’s “Dune” with him as a child actor, and revealing how he became as close as family to her over the years. In one post, she shared photos from the set and, in the other, her reflections on their relationship.
After sharing an anecdote from their last time together in December 2023, Witt wrote, “i’m writing these words in shock. but what i know is that i owe it to the enormity of who he was in my life to immediately lend mine to the chorus of voices that are in mourning at this hour. and in celebration.”
Witt, who starred in eight Hallmark Christmas movies from 2013 to 2020 and the 2024 hit horror flick “Longlegs,” continued, “my david lynch was family. as familiar to me, that voice, that smile, those eyes with their vision clear across to those realms, as any blood relative has ever been. without david lynch, i have no idea what my life would look like.”
She added, “he taught me what it was to make a movie, how to conduct yourself on a set, what to expect from a director, the sort of respect that is paid and is given. the way you give yourself completely and trust entirely when a director who has a clear vision asks you to fly with him creatively, destination unknown to any save for him.”
Witt also shared that Lynch inspired her to practice Transcendental Meditation (TM), a calming and centering technique meant to be practiced twice a day for 20-minutes each, writing, “the biggest regret i have at this moment is that i didn’t email him to tell him i have been practicing TM every day again since new year’s – as he lovingly and sternly instructed me to (‘like clockwork’).”
In the comment section of her post, Witt continued her reflections, sharing, “i’ve been sitting here in the park for a long time now, just staring at these trees. the clear blue tennessee sky above me, far from where he made his last ascent up into that next realm, far far away and yet not so far at all, only a few hours ago. i feel him all around me. he is creating still and he is dancing, celebrating, marveling at the sights and vibrations. i promise you that. he’s delighting in it.”
Hallmark star Kristoffer Polaha replied to Witt’s reflections by commenting, “Beautiful. And my deepest sympathies; he was a huge influence on my work as an artist. I loved him from afar, how lucky for you to dance in his orbit and he in yours.”

In addition to Witt, many other Hallmark actors paid tribute to Lynch. “The Santa Class” star Benjamin Ayres posted a photo of Lynch in his Instagram Stories and wrote, “This one hurts. Rest in peace. ????”
Scott Wolf, who co-starred with Lacey Chabert in 2023’s hit Hallmark movie “A Merry Scottish Christmas,” shared a particularly vulnerable video of himself in his Instagram Stories after learning of Lynch’s death.
With tears streaming down his face, Wolf said, “I just read that David Lynch passed away, and I don’t know — I mean, I know why it’s hit me hard. I mean, it’s hit me particularly hard because he was such a lovely human being, and a lovely artist, and it’s such a loss for the world. So, God rest his soul.”
Longtime Hallmark star Wes Brown, who appeared in the 2017 “Twin Peaks” series, posted a photo of himself with Lynch in his Instagram Stories, with the show’s somber theme song playing.
Andrea Brooks of “When Calls The Heart” posted two memes featuring Lynch in her Instagram stories and wrote, “RIP good sir.” Each featured a quote from him, including one with the words, “One day the sadness will end. But I don’t think today’s the day.”
Other stars who paid tribute to Lynch in their Instagram Stories included “Miracle in Bethlehem, PA” star Laura Vandervoort, “Holidazed” star Erin Cahill, and “My Argentine Heart” star Juan Pablo DiPace.
Lynch was nominated for four Oscars and four Golden Globes, and received an honorary Academy Award in 2020, per IMDb. At the time of publication, a cause of death had not been given.
