Harvey Elliott has risked the wrath of Everton fans after cheekily claiming he could only hear Liverpool supporters during Wednesday’s fiery Merseyside derby.
The two fierce rivals came together for the final time at Goodison Park in midweek, and it was a clash befitting of the long rivalry. Beto had given Everton the lead, only for Liverpool to rally through Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah.
James Tarkowski sent Goodison into raptures with his brilliant, stoppage-time equaliser. The chaos only continued late on as referee Michael Oliver brandished four red cards as tempers flared and the atmosphere spilled over.
But that was not the view of Liverpool midfielder Elliott, who cheekily put down the home support at Goodison, praising only the Liverpool fans. Speaking in a post-match interview, he said: “This game feels like a loss. But I think because of everything that happened, we need to look at the bigger picture you know and it’s a point on the board at a tough ground.
“Circumstances as well with it being the last Merseyside derby here.” Asked further if he could feel the crowd, he instantly replied: “Not really.”
And he was also asked if there was a roar from the crowd both before and during the game, the midfielder had another amusing response as he said: “Yeah, the Liverpool fans.”
Elliott’s assessment is unlikely to be one universally shared. Everton boss David Moyes unsurprisingly hailed the atmosphere at Goodison as his side snatched an unlikely point.
Speaking after the game, he said: “I just feel the support in here was unbelievable tonight, it was incredible support and I think it was fitting they got an end like they did.

“I said to the players there it’s great the supporters can go away – we didn’t win, which was disappointing, but we got a draw in a game that didn’t look as if it was going to go in our favour.
“It would have been hard to come here losing 2-1 and talking about it. But I think the way the crowd stayed to the end, which was a magical moment. There was a bit of tooing and froing at the end which might have added to the entertainment.”
The Everton boss added: “The place was boiling hot all night, emotional, it was an incredible atmosphere inside the stadium.”
Everton will be hoping for another positive result this weekend as they travel to Crystal Palace. Liverpool in the meantime are up against another of the Premier League’s strugglers in Wolves.
