Hibs give Celtic celebrations the A-list treatment
Sunshine on Leith blared after the game as Hibs returned to a famous club tradition
David Gray insists his Hibs heroes deserve their moment in the Sunshine on Leith.
The Easter Road side continued their remarkable resurgence as they stunned Brendan Rodgers’ Premiership leaders with a 2-1 triumph. And as the full-time whistle blew, the players joined with the jubilant home support to belt out the club’s famous anthem as it blared from the stadium PA system.
The Proclaimers hit is reserved for only the most special of occasions and Gray was delighted to sample the sweet soundtrack for the first time as boss. The 2016 Scottish Cup winner said after watching his side rack up a 13th game unbeaten: “I think the players fully did deserve it. The fans as well, the atmosphere right from the start of the game was really important. There are these special moments and you can feel that with players and the fans, the connection is there at the minute. You can really feel it every single time you take the field at the moment.
“I've been very fortunate as a player to stand there and feel that on the pitch. Obviously, first time as a manager which I'm delighted about. But I've always said to the players that when these special moments cone at this club, you need to cherish it.
“I think then when you think back to how important that result was and performance was, it's then fitting as well that two years since our former owner Ron Gordon passed, you've seen the boards today celebrating his life. That's certainly something that he would be really proud of today looking down and we needed that today as well. So I'm delighted for absolutely everyone involved.”
Hibs found themselves two goals down inside 20 minutes when Celtic first visited Edinburgh this season. But this time it was the hosts springing out the blocks to score through Josh Campbell.

The midfielder headed home again just before the break to ensure Daizen Meada’s second half strike counted for nothing. Gray added: “I thought we were more excellent, outstanding actually. Before the game I spoke a lot about we needed every player to be absolutely at the top of their game. We needed every player to give absolutely everything and give the amount of energy that goes into that. I thought they delivered that.
“Josh was excellent. He's had a real good season, he's in good form at the moment. He obviously came out of the team during a difficult period but he’s responded in a real positive way, exactly the way you want a player to respond in terms of being left out. I don't like singling people out but I think obviously he'll get the credit for his goals as well.”
Hibs deserved to be in front but got lucky late one when VAR Alan Muir stepped in to controversially rule out Maeda’s equaliser. The telly official insisted the ball was out of play but Rodgers didn’t think so. As for Gray, he said: "I was delighted that the groundsman painted the lines straight this morning and the pitch was the size it was!
“It’s very, very fine margins isn't it? So the fine margins that we get with rub of the green today. A split second earlier, he ball stays in then they equalise and then all the momentum would have been with Celtic. Sometimes you need that little bit of luck but I think today with our effort, they fully deserved that break.”
At team that at one stage looked set for a relegation scrap is now dreaming of Europe ahead of huge clashes against rivals for third spot Dundee United and Hearts this week. Gray added: “This is a massive week, we know that with the top six split coming soon so we need to make sure we get the points as quickly as we can and make sure we can cement our place in there. But three points today certainly helps with that so we're delighted for everyone involved.”
