HINGHAM — Addy Garrity, Shea Richardson, Caroline Doherty and Hannah Lasch each tallied goals on Martin Luther King Day, as Hingham registered a 4-2 win over crosstown rival Notre Dame Academy.
“I think NDA is obviously a really good team,” said Hingham coach Courtney Turner. “They made it to the finals last year. Every time we play them, it’s going to be a great game. So, honestly, just look forward to it, and just look at it as an opportunity to get better. Just showcase our talent.”
Entering Monday’s annual “Hingham Cup,” Hingham was atop the MIAA’s Div. 1 power power rankings with a perfect record and a team rating of 2.9674. Notre Dame was slotted second (2.9087). The Harborwomen (12-0-0) came out flying to start, as Garrity sniped her eighth goal of the season in transition to make it a 1-0 game just 2:31 into play.
Notre Dame (5-3-1) struggled to get any offensive tempo early, but caught a break to begin the second period as Sarah White tallied a shorthanded goal to tie things at 1-all.
But 17 seconds after the equalizer, the Harborwomen capitalized on the power play as Richardson notched a goal to make it 2-1. Later, Doherty buried her 24th goal of the campaign off of a faceoff, extending things to 3-1 with 3:58 left.
As the final seconds bled off the clock in the period, Hannah Lasch slid the puck toward the net. Her prayer was answered, as it ricocheted off the goaltender’s pads home to make it 4-1 entering the third.
“I saw Caroline open,” Lasch said. “I knew that there wasn’t a lot of time left, so I was looking to get it in front, cause chaos, and it worked.”
Doherty and Lasch would each tack on an assist for Hingham. Jocelyn Gray dished out a pair of assists, while Ella Flaherty finished with a late goal for NDA.
The win snapped a four-year skid at the Hingham Cup for the Harborwomen.
“We haven’t done it in a while,” Doherty said. “So we knew going into this game that it was going to be tough. We wanted that Cup back because we haven’t had it in so long. We kind of just kept the energy up in the locker room and out on the ice. I think it really showed, showed off that we wanted to win this game.”
