In the 1990s, the bedroom walls of most teenage girls were adorned with posters of hunky stars from Australian soaps. Characters like Scott Robinson, Mike Young and Rick Alessi from Neighbours (portrayed by Jason Donovan, Guy Pearce and Dan Falzon) as well as Shane Parrish and Vinnie Patterson from Home And Away (Dieter Brummer and Ryan Kwanten) were household names.
But another Aussie heartthrob also held a prominent place on fans' walls – Home And Away's Blake Dean, played by Les Hill. Blake first graced Summer Bay in July 1990 alongside his younger sister Karen, searching for Ailsa Stewart who'd been in prison with their mum, Margot.

He was a handsome, lively teen who was constantly landing himself in hot water at school and earning the ire of headmaster Donald Fisher. Despite Blake's romance with Meg Bowman, it ended in heartbreak when Meg, who had been secretly fighting leukaemia, died in his arms on the beach.
For actor Les, this was one of his initial roles, as he was still in school and only 16 when he was cast as Blake. However, within a few years, and with Home And Away then competing against the hugely popular Neighbours in the same TV slot, he rose to become one of soap's biggest stars, raking in $2,000 for personal appearances.

In 1993, Les was the talk of the soap world when Inside Soap magazine readers crowned him Best Male Character, Best Actor and Sexiest Man In Soap, while the Sydney Morning Herald hailed him as Home And Away's new heartthrob, claiming he "obliterated the memory of Craig MacLachlan," Neighbours' own Henry Ramsay. Rumours swirled that Blake might even snag a part on the iconic US series Baywatch, but commitments to Home And Away put a damper on those plans, reports OK!.
However, by 1993, things took a turn, and Les declared his departure from the sun-soaked shores of Summer Bay. He didn't stray far, popping over to the UK for a stint on the children's TV series Go Getters with household names like Craig Charles and Michaela Strachan, while also dazzling audiences in Christmas pantos.

Over the next 30 years, Les graced our screens in an array of TV series and films, from the gritty Underbelly as gangster Jason Moran – where he's virtually unrecognisable from his soap days – to the adrenaline-pumping Rescue: Special Ops, alongside Craig MacLachlan, and the charming Wonderland. But Les never quite left Blake behind, reprising his beloved role for Home And Away's fourteenth anniversary in 2002 and its milestone 4,000th episode in 2005.
Off-screen, Les has turned his love for winemaking into a reality with his own brand, Seven Sundays. He shared the origin story with stuff.co.nz in 2009, revealing: "It started out as a joking ideas between two friends of mine one Sunday afternoon and ended up with us making our own label."

He also expressed his aspirations: "I'd like to head back to New Zealand, base myself in Wellington, and head out into the Marlborough region see if I can't get a new Sauvignon Blanc for Australian Seven Sundays."
His ventures beyond acting seem to be fruitful, as Les managed to sell his beachside Sydney property for a cool $2.81 million in 2020, just one year after snapping it up.
At 51, his acting career shows no signs of slowing down – he recently featured in the Australian TV series One Night, which follows three friends profoundly affected by the events of one traumatic night two decades ago, and starred alongside Jodie Whittaker, known for her role as the Doctor in Doctor Who.
